6 Best Indoor Dog Gates to Create Safe Spaces at Home!

While we have a habit of treating our lovely four-legged animals as small humans with fur, there are spaces we’d rather them not trifle in. Whether it’s your home office or entertainment room, there are effective and affordable methods to keep your pup at bay.

Dog gates are indoor versions of the wireless dog fences in your yard but without the static shock!

Creating dog-free zones is not something to feel guilty about, either. According to an article from Vetinfo, gates are effective training tools. They can even be used for teaching obedience commands. Additionally, gates give dogs space to roam rather than being “crated.”

Our team selected 20 well-rated gates, and based on our testing, came away with several top picks and honorable mentions.

How We Narrowed Down the Best Indoor Dog Gates

Two dogs behind an indoor dog gate
Indoor dog gates are an easy way to create pet-free zones around your home.

Dog gates are a hidden hassle of the pet-owner world. If not carefully chosen, owners can quickly find themselves fumbling with this cruel object because it didn’t hold up the way it promised. We’d rather not spend 20 minutes bent over an unwieldy gate, only for the dog to knock it down instantly.

From our research, we formed a set of “attributes” to look for when testing products based on common uses of the item. These include:

  • Affordability: What you pay for versus what you get in quality
  • Ease of Install: Was it a one-hour ordeal to set up?
  • Quality: Overall build and aesthetic of the gate
  • Design: Whether it “held up” against pets

Taking this list of standards, we selected 20 popular choices and thoroughly tested each of them. In the end, 13 made our list and are accessible from sellers like Amazon, Walmart, and Chewy.

Best Indoor Dog Gates reviewed

1. Best Overall: Carlson Extra Wide Gate

Product Ratings

Affordability4/5
Ease of Install5/5
Quality4/5
Design5/5

Dimensions: 36.5” x 1” x 31” | Brand: Carlson Pet Products | Material: Steel

What We Liked

  • Multiple Safety Locks
  • Effective against dogs with an affinity for chewing
  • Easy installation

What We Didn’t Like

  • The access door does not stay open

We like when products come with nifty accessories and useful modifications, and the Carlson extra-wide delivered! It’s adjustable, comes with a pet door, and has safety locks.

Functionality

This gate did the trick for most of our test dogs, although some of the adventurous ones could fly over it if determined. Other than that, the Carlson was an inexpensive solution to most corralling problems. We also appreciated the locking mechanism to ensure safe use, especially if young children happen to be wandering around.

Installation Notes

Read the instructions carefully! We checked out Amazon’s reviewers who mentioned the gate being “bent.” This is on purpose and the manufacturer even makes note of it! The gate relies on compression to extend outwards, and once in place, use the hardware to tighten the parts (if applicable).

Limitations

Our team both loved and questioned the swinging pet door. It was wide enough for large felines to pass through. However, it tended to not stay open and swung in either direction.

2. Best for Small Dogs: Pawland Freestanding Wooden Gate

Product Ratings

Affordability4/5
Ease of Install5/5
Quality3.5/5
Design5/5

Dimensions: 80” x 2.83” x 24” | Brand: PAWLAND | Material: Wood

What We Liked

  • Foldable, customizable panels, arrives fully assembled
  • Rubberized feet to prevent scratches
  • Freestanding

What We Didn’t Like

  • Wood is “soft” an inexpensive feeling
  • May fall over if not placed appropriately

An owner of a puppy or a small dog should be more than pleased by the Pawland gate. It’s sturdy enough not to be knocked down and arrives fully assembled. What a dream!

Functionality

The wooden panels are foldable and curved, allowing for a customized setup and easy protection of space. Potential buyers can also choose between the number of panels they would like.

Installation Notes

What more can we say than, “Take it out of the box and it’s ready to go.” The only caveat is placement requires a bit of care. If positioning the gate in any way other than straight, it can easily tumble over.

Limitations

While the design and installation won major points from our scoring, the quality testing resulted in a few negative marks. The “wood” was not as imagined. It was rather soft, and had a cheaper feel, but was not a major detractor.

3. Best for Versatility: Evenflo Wooden Gate

Product Ratings

Affordability5/5
Ease of Install4/5
Quality3.5/5
Design3.5/5

Dimensions: 2.5” x 50” x 32” | Brand: Evenflo | Material: Wood

What We Liked

  • Non-toxic finish
  • Non-marking rubber bumpers
  • Straightforward installation

What We Didn’t Like

  • Takes practice to completely setup
  • Questionable quality of locking mechanism and clips

The Evenflo boasts an elegant wood finish and provides the robustness to contain energetic dogs. Also, the finish is non-toxic, should your friend get a case of the nibbles.

Functionality

This two-pound model is quite tall and makes it a great candidate for more adventurous animals. Our team pulled and pushed on the gate and it held up well against the tension.

Installation Notes

At first glance, our team was wary of the mechanism to lock the gate in place. However, the installation was a breeze. The pressure-mounted system allows for easy placement and mobility around the home.

Limitations

We recommend that installation be taken very carefully, as this fence is not like the other models on our list. When first setting up, if the bars begin to bow outwards, stop pushing and reconfigure the unit.

4. Best for Wide Entrances: Regalo Super-Wide Pet Gate

Product Ratings

Affordability3/5
Ease of Install5/5
Quality5/5
Design4/5

Dimensions: 192.13” x 0.39” x 27.95” | Brand: Regalo | Material: Metal

What We Liked

  • Detachable and foldable
  • Bundled with hardware for wall-mounting
  • Spaciously adequate for creating a pen or blocking off a room

What We Didn’t Like

  • Plastic parts are not the best quality but can be replaced

If a home is laid out in a non-traditional format, or if its entryways are wide, we couldn’t recommend the Regalo enough.

Functionality

One of our favorite features of the gate is its versatility. It can be detached two pieces at a time and is foldable. The ability to set it up almost anywhere and configure it into a variety of shapes is a major bonus.

Installation Notes

The team’s assessment of installation was overall positive. It was easy to assemble and came with additional wall-mount equipment.

Limitations

With this model, there are plastic pieces that get attached and detached during installation. We recommend anyone with this gate make sure these pieces are secured. If they were to fall off, it could pose a health hazard for your pet.

5. Best for Design: Richell Wood Freestanding Gate

Product Ratings

Affordability3/5
Ease of Install5/5
Quality5/5
Design4/5

Dimensions: 26.4 x 17.7 x 20.1 inches | Brand: Richell | Material: Wood

What We Liked

  • Elegant, aesthetically pleasing
  • Ideal for small and medium-sized dogs
  • Sturdy base

What We Didn’t Like

  • Not effective for large, jumpy dogs

This graceful, freestanding pet gate is a show-stopper in the design department. Potential buyers who want something that blends well with auburn furniture will be overjoyed!

Functionality

We appreciated the side panels and extendable width of this gate. It makes it easy to move around to different locations.

Installation Notes

Fortunately, this model comes with a “no installation necessary” feature. Buyers can pull it from the box and it’s ready to create safe zones in the house!

Limitations

The only limitation to this dog gate is its dimensions. It is only suitable for small and medium-sized dogs (16 to 17.5 lbs).

6. Best for Large Dogs: Regalo Extra Tall Gate

Product Ratings

Affordability5/5
Ease of Install4.5/5
Quality4.5/5
Design5/5

Dimensions: 42” x 1” x 37” | Brand: Regalo | Material: Steel

What We Liked

  • Foldable for easy storage and moving
  • Aesthetically pleasing
  • Ideal for large, heavy dogs

What We Didn’t Like

  • Gate opens in one direction
  • Concerns with usability

Potential buyers in search of an elegant, more permanent fixture to keep their rambunctious dogs away, this gate is an excellent choice. It can be mounted to the walls and features a locking mechanism.

Functionality

Two features we noticed right away were the durability and aesthetic appeal of the Regalo model. Its dark, curved structure provided a nice backdrop compared to the traditional plastic models. Regarding its strength, it kept the bulkiest dogs at bay.

Installation Notes

The installation instructions were straightforward. It’s important to identify the top and bottom when using the extensions. We also appreciated the wall-mounts if a potential buyer is placing this gate in their home for long-term use.

Limitations

One issue was the opening gate and its locking mechanism. First, we found it odd that it opened unidirectionally. And secondly, the plastic locking pieces had difficulty connecting. If potential buyers don’t see themselves using the gate, then it may not be much of a concern.

The Winner

Overall, we loved the Carlson Extra Wide Gate. It’s a sturdy, inexpensive, and effective method of keeping dogs out of places they shouldn’t go. It’s built from safe materials in case a pet likes to chew, and the swinging door is a wonderful addition as well.

How to Choose the Best Indoor Dog Gate

Not every dog gate is going to work for every pet and every household. Take the following factors into consideration when choosing the best indoor dog gate for your situation.

What Type of Fence?

Looking for something expandable, foldable, or freestanding? And how about a combination of options? Pressure-mounted gates fit well between doorways, foldable gates save space in small apartments, and walk-through features work in a multi-pet home.

Prioritizing Installation?

In our review, we covered a variety of models. Each had a unique setup, ranging from foldable, extendable, and mountable gates. A key priority is how long a potential buyer might want to fiddle with the set-up. As we tested the products, some models should have had warnings for pinched fingers.

Honorable Mentions

Here’s a brief look at the 7 options that didn’t quite make our top-clippers list:

1. Richell Wood Gate – Runner Up for Tension Mounted Design

It’s small, short, and elegant. We appreciated the hardwood construction of this gate, but unfortunately had trouble finding product availability across common stores. That’s why we highly recommend the Evenflo Wooden Gate.

2. Evenflo Soft and Wide Gate – Considered for Efficiency

This gate sets up in minutes and is built with a soft material. It’s non-adjustable though, and the feet may mark up the wall. While effective, we believe the Carlson Extra Wide Gate is the better alternative.

3. Richell 3-in-1 Convertible Gate – Considered for Space Saving

Choose from this 4-panel gate or a 6-panel variant depending on the size of the space. This gate can be used for 9 – 44lb dogs and should give enough latitude for them to stay on one side. However, the thin bars are easy to latch onto. So instead, we thought the Regalo Extra Tall Gate was a better choice.

4. Toddleroo Extra Wide Gate – Considered for Versatility

This was another excellent pressure-mounted gate. While designed for human children, it does the trick of animals too. The wire mesh provides good stability and it can be mounted just about anywhere. But we chose the Evenflo Wood Gate as a trustful recommendation.

5. MidWest Homes Steel Gate – Considered for Simplicity

This affordable, clean model comes in both black and white steel. It’s very compact so is not suitable for living spaces and entryways, we highly advise taking measurements before considering. Otherwise, it’s an excellent option. Because of its limitations though, the team thinks the Pawland Wooden Freestanding Gate is a better option.

6. Carlson Extra-Tall Gate – Considered for Multi-Pet Households

Talk about heavy-duty, this gate is nearly 39” tall and can stop just about any mastiff from barreling through. What’s better yet, a small pet door can easily be accessed by other animals in the home.

The only drawback was the questionable quality of the smaller door’s hinges. We definitely recommend the Carlson Extra-Wide model in its place.
