Funny cat and dog knocking over trash can
Dog proof trash cans will keep your kitchen clean and protect your pet from potential harm.

We considered several factors when reviewing dog-proof trash cans. We looked at what materials were used, the lid and security of the bins, their durability, and their ability to eliminate odors. We also looked at top companies and customer reviews.

Superhuman is an innovator in design tools for a more efficient home. This company invents new technologies that elevate the functionality of common devices. We found this leading company to be a top manufacturer known for durability, design, and function.

iTouchless is all about customer service. They offer 100% satisfaction assurance and are backed by a two-year Full-Service Manufacturer’s Promise. They have a dedicated US-based customer service department. In one case, iTouchless saw a poor review and reached out to the customer to remedy the situation.

Finally, we searched the internet for top trash cans that dog owners love. We looked at Amazon Choice products and other online retailers like Home Depot and Bed, Bath & Beyond. Here, we compared ratings and reviews of dozens of dog-proof trash cans, and chose 20 models to test.

During our testing, 13 trash cans made our top-picks list, and 3 earned honorable mentions. Read on to see our favorites, what we love about them, what we don’t, and why we think they’re your best bet for keeping your furry pal out of the trash.

Best Dog Proof Trash Cans

1. Best Overall: Simplehuman Dual Compartment Recycling Can

Product Ratings

Odor Elimination5/5

Dimensions: 14.2 x 22 x 25.8 inches | Weight: 21.3 pounds | Capacity: 15.3 gallons/58 liters | Brand: Simplehuman | Material: Stainless Steel

What We Liked

  • Brushed stainless steel
  • Silent-close lid
  • Pocket for liner storage

What We Didn’t Like

  • Some issues with denting
  • Does not fit standard trash bags
  • Mechanics are made of plastic

As you’ll see as we outline the best dog-proof trash cans, simplehuman is a major player in this category. They make highly effective solutions to prevent your furball from playing with the rubbish.

We loved the brushed stainless steel finish that comes in a choice of 5 colors schemes to suit home decor. This trash can will work well in traditional and modern kitchens without looking out of place.

Not only did we think that this was a good-looking option, but the coating is also treated with an antimicrobial agent that stops mold, mildew, and bacteria from growing on the surface.

The hands-free operation keeps conditions more sanitary in the home. The ultra-wide pedal has been designed to withstand 150,000 steps. This translates to about 20 years of normal use.

The 15-gallon capacity means you won’t constantly be emptying this bin. Custom liners ensure a snug fit if you don’t object to buying proprietary replacements. We found that the 2 compartments streamline separating trash from recycling while the whole unit is secure enough that there’s no chance of our dog breaking in.

2. Runner Up: ITouchless Stainless Steel Trash Can

Product Ratings

Odor Elimination5/5
Durability 5/5

Dimensions: 12.75 x 10.75 x 27.88 inches | Weight: 8 pounds | Capacity: 13 gallons | Brand: iTouchless | Material: Stainless Steel

What We Liked

  • Has filter for odor control
  • Excellent battery life
  • Ideal for a small home
  • Powered by an AC adapter or batteries

What We Didn’t Like

  • The opening is slightly narrow
  • The AC adapter is sold separately
  • The motion detector does not respond unless the motion is very close

Over the past year, we’ve all become more aware of hygiene than ever before. What better way to ramp up hygiene in the home than an automatic trash can? Kiss goodbye to dirty hands and say hello to a completely automated solution activated by the motion of your hands.

We loved this tall and slim13-gallon bin. We found that the rectangular shape means you can pop it up against an existing unit, or slip it in the corner of your room without worrying about your pup compromising the trash.

The premium stainless steel build looks great and is a cinch to keep clean. The surface is resistant to smears and fingerprints so it should stay spotless. All you need to do is wipe the exterior down regularly. The lid is made from durable ABS plastic, and it’s also a snap to keep clean.

We appreciate that this trash can uses either AC power or batteries, giving you outstanding flexibility. The 4 D-cell batteries are sold separately, as is the optional AC adapter.

For a cost-effective and automated method of parting your dog from the trash, give this touchless bin a shot.

3. Best Budget Buy: Simplehuman Trash Can

Product Ratings

Odor Elimination5/5
Durability 5/5

Dimensions: 14.4 x 18.7 x 26.2 inches | Weight: 7 pounds | Capacity: 13 gallons | Brand: Simplehuman | Material: Plastic

What We Liked

  • Customized liners for a seamless fit
  • Lid closes silently
  • Space-saving shape

What We Didn’t Like

  • The plastic build is slightly flimsy
  • Can develop odors over time
  • Does not use standard liners

Are you looking for a trash can on a budget? If so, this offering from simplehuman gets the job done fuss-free with no bells or whistles, and it’s one of the cheapest bins that doesn’t stiff you on the performance front.

We found that the compromise that comes from achieving a bargain price point is evident in the plastic build. This can is not for you if you are shopping for trash cans with aesthetics as a priority, but if you prize function over form, you’re in luck.

The semi-rounded design maximizes placement options. We put this trash can against the wall and hoped that our pup stayed away. The sliding lock on the lid kept him out when he tried to nose it open.

We noted that the lid is designed to close slowly and without making too much noise. This can has custom-fit liners so you get a perfect fit inside and no trash sneaking down outside the bag.

Crowned by a 5-year limited warranty, this bin might not be a beauty, but it’s well worth popping on your shortlist.

4. Best for Small Spaces: Behrens Locking Lid Can

Product Ratings

Odor Elimination5/5
Durability 4/5

Dimensions: 16.3 x 16.3 x 15.3 inches | Weight:  4.4 pounds | Capacity: 10 gallon | Brand: Behrens | Material: Steel

What We Liked

  • Unique industrial design
  • Rust and heat resistant
  • The lid can be locked

What We Didn’t Like

  • Only suitable for dry trash
  • Labels are difficult to remove

Sometimes you need a locking can in the bathroom, bedroom, or office. Behrens serves up a classic locking lid can with a 10-gallon capacity that’s great for anyone needing a compact and dog-proof trash can.

The locking lid on this container means there’s no chance your pup will compromise this container however hard he tries. We did a double-take because it looks like plastic at a glance, but it’s made from steel, giving us the ideal combination of durability and performance.

We loved the smaller capacity of this bin. It’s a great choice for any room where space is tight but you don’t want to risk an open rubbish bin tempting your dog to root around inside.

We didn’t mind the utilitarian look, because it kept our trash secure and our dogs safe from eating something they shouldn’t.

5. Best Warranty: Simplehuman Kitchen Step Trash Can

Product Ratings

Odor Elimination4/5
Durability 4/5

Dimensions: 23.3 x 10.4 x 26 inches | Weight: 18.7 pounds | Capacity: 12.5 gallon | Brand: Simplehuman | Material: Stainless Steel

What We Liked

  • Unbeatable brand heritage
  • Comes with a package of liner bags
  • The lid can be locked open

What We Didn’t Like

  • Quite awkward to change bags
  • Have to buy custom liners from the manufacturer
  • A plastic liner can retain odors
  • The two-piece lid allows odors to escape

Next up in our hunt for the best dog-proof trash can comes another example from simplehuman.

In all respects, we found this brushed stainless steel bin performs strongly. This manufacturer has a wide line of trash cans at varying capacities. This model is designed to hold 11.9 gallons, so it’s best for singles, couples, or small families.

We loved this configuration which comes with a delicate butterfly step. If you have young kids at home you may consider opting for the rectangular step instead.

The only real gripe we had is that the butterfly-style lid allows some odors to escape because it isn’t sealed as well as single-piece lids. This increased the curiosity of our dogs, which isn’t ideal when trying to keep them out of the trash.

If you’re in any element of doubt, the 10-year limited warranty shows you how much confidence simplehuman places in this trash can. After all, no manufacturer expects to lose out on a guarantee, right?

6. Best Filter: ITouchless Soft Step Trash Can

Product Ratings

Odor Elimination5/5
Durability 4/5

Dimensions: 14 x 16.75 x 26 inches | Weight: 13 pounds | Capacity: 13 gallons | Brand: iTouchless | Material: Stainless Steel

What We Liked

  • Uses standard trash bags, saving money
  • Smudge-resistant
  • Uses carbon filter to minimize odors

What We Didn’t Like

  • The weight of the lid could be improved so it closes tightly
  • Develops odors over time
  • Liners can be difficult to remove

iTouchless enters the fray again with another stellar trash can that will stop your inquisitive dog from breaching the trash.

We loved how iTouchless made this trash can in various beautiful colors, including rose gold and white. If you’re tired of the usual sea of black and silver bins, choose from a wide array of bright colors to add a dose of fun to your kitchen.

We appreciated that the stainless steel bin wouldn’t pick up any fingerprints or smears, thanks to the smear-repellent coating. We found that the plastic liner remained smell-free for a long time, but it did begin to pick up odors and had to be sanitized.

To further address the issue of smell, we welcomed the filter baked in to neutralize any lingering odors and keep your home fresh. The oversized pedal makes it easy to access the trash can but impossible for your dog. This bin will foil even the smartest dog.

The only complaint we had was that we felt that the lid could be improved with greater weight so that it closes fully without needing to be pushed down to make contact.

Overall, this is an efficient and cost-effective touchless bin that keeps hygiene front and center with your dog removed from the equation.

7. Best Infrared Sensor: NINESTARS Automatic Touchless Trash Can

Product Ratings

Odor Elimination5/5
Durability 3/5

Dimensions: 13 x 21.3 x 26.2 inches | Weight: 11.46 pounds | Capacity: 18.5 gallons | Brand: Ninestars | Material: Stainless Steel

What We Liked

  • Infrared motion sensor
  • Plastic inserts for trash and recycling
  • 2 year limited warranty

What We Didn’t Like

  • The infrared sensor can be picky, making it hard to get the can open
  • Removable plastic inserts can retain odors
  • Customer Service is lacking

Your home may be packed with technology and smart devices, but are you still manually opening and closing your bin? The easiest way to keep your nosey dog out of the trash without training is to invest in an automatic “smart” bin.

We loved the brushed stainless steel finish that looks great, repels smears and fingerprints, and is built to last. You should get years of faithful service from this bin.

It has a waterproof infrared sensor built into the can that opens the lid when your hands get near. Our dogs sniffed the sensor and even pawed at it trying to get in, but he didn’t get it to open.

Over time we had trouble with the infrared sensor becoming less sensitive to our hand movements. We weren’t sure why because we kept it clean, and customer service wasn’t any help to us. Most users don’t have this problem, so we still think it’s a great recommendation.

We thought that this trash can wasn’t cheap, but considering the functionality, build quality, and the problem it solves, we don’t think you’ll be disappointed with the overall value.

8. Best Lid Lock: NINESTARS Automatic Trash Can

Product Ratings

Odor Elimination5/5
Durability 4/5

Dimensions: 11.22 x 15.24 x 25.04 inches | Weight: 6.75 pounds | Capacity: 13 gallons | Brand: Ninestars | Material: Stainless Steel

What We Liked

  • Infrared motion sensor for hands-free messes
  • Removable plastic inserts for trash and recycling
  • 2 year limited warranty

What We Didn’t Like

  • Issues with the infrared sensor
  • Plastic inserts can retain odors
  • Customer Service is not very helpful

NINESTARS produces some tech-driven trash cans that stop you from getting your hands dirty while also preventing your dog from raiding the trash.

The 13-gallon capacity of this model makes it a good choice for a larger family and uses standard tall kitchen bags. You won’t need to purchase special bags to use this trash can, which we appreciate because it saves a ton of money.

The brushed stainless steel build ensures you’ll get an impressive lifespan from this bin. It won’t pick up any fingerprints and smears, and it’s super simple to clean.

When your hands approach the lid, this is detected by the motion sensor, and the lid will automatically open. The battery life is extended thanks to delay-sensing technology, and the bin won’t be opened when your dog walks past.

You’ll need a couple of D-cell batteries that are not included, so buy some in advance if you plan to try this can.

9. Best Style: ITouchless Step Trash Can

Product Ratings

Odor Elimination5/5
Durability 4/5

Dimensions: 15.4 x 19.3 x 26.2 inches | Weight: 19 pounds | Capacity: 16 gallons | Brand: iTouchless | Material: Stainless Steel

What We Liked

  • Pair of removable buckets
  • Recycling and trash in one can
  • Uses standard trash bags

What We Didn’t Like

  • Small capacity of the plastic liners
  • Garbage bags don’t always stay in place
  • The sensor can have issues over time

Do you have a hectic household? Do you sometimes struggle to keep up with recycling? In both cases, the iTouchless dual trash can might be just what you’ve been looking for.

We found 2 removable trash cans, each with an 8-gallon capacity. One side is for

regular trash and the other for plastic or glass that needs recycling. We liked the added benefit of keeping those used containers and the trash well clear of our dog.

We loved the elegant stainless steel look that will return a long lifespan. We feel this bin should last for years.

There’s a pedal to operate either side of the bin making it easy for us to get inside but stopping our dog in his tracks. We noted that this can uses regular 8-gallon trash bags so you won’t be locked into any proprietary replacements.

Our only real complaint with this bin is the tiny capacity. For households with more than two people, the bags will need to be carried out several times a day.

For a roomy and classy trash can that will foil your dog, iTouchless hits another home run.

10. Best Outdoor Design: Safco Products Canmeleon

Product Ratings

Odor Elimination5/5
Durability 4/5

Dimensions: 18.5 x 18 x 28.75 inches | Weight: 10 pounds | Capacity: 30 gallons | Brand: Safco | Material: Polyethylene

What We Liked

  • Weather-resistant
  • Tall design makes it difficult for dogs to get into
  • Simple design

What We Didn’t Like

  • Quite awkward to change bags
  • Extremely large
  • Requires anchoring or weighing down

As we edge to the end of our collection of the best dog-proof trash cans, Safco Products offers the Canmeleon with the aim of keeping your dog away from your rubbish.

The design of this bin is traditional yet industrial. The open top makes it easy for you to throw waste inside while keeping your hands clean. The height and shape of the opening mean there’s no opportunity for your canine to work his way inside.

We loved the generous 30-gallon capacity. It gave us enough space to contain a whole day of trash from a barbecue with friends that generated a can full of delicious-smelling trash that our dogs could not get into and scatter around the yard.

We gave an A+ to the weather-resistant design because while some people may want this can inside the building, the open top makes it an outdoor can for most because it will not stop odors. This is a good option for food trucks, small businesses, and others who need high-capacity trash storage that can’t be easily tipped and scattered.

If conditions are very windy or unstable, you can weigh or anchor this bin down for more robust security. We recommend this strong and stable solution to keep your dog out of the outdoor trash.

11. Best Unique Look: Simplehuman Semi-Round Trash Can

Product Ratings

Odor Elimination5/5
Durability 4/5

Dimensions: 14.4 x 18.7 x 26.2 inches | Weight: 7.5 pounds | Capacity: 13 gallons | Brand: Simplehuman | Material: Plastic

What We Liked

  • The unique and pretty design
  • Silent lid opening and closing

What We Didn’t Like

  • Expensive product
  • The shape can cause issues with the lid opening
  • Custom-fit liners which are inconvenient and less affordable

Simplehuman makes a cross-section of trash cans appealing to all tastes and budgets. This is one of the smaller bins in the line, so how does it shape up?

The 11.9-gallon capacity gives you plenty of interior space without eating up too much real estate in the kitchen. The butterfly step prohibits dogs from playing with the trash and allows you to throw waste inside without touching the bin.

Our only complaints were the small capacity, and the need to purchase bags directly from the manufacturer. However, the customized liners guarantee a seamless fit and prevent any waste from making its way down the side of the bag, so they are a must-use with this can.

The lid is designed to close quietly, and the mechanism is smooth and durable. Overall, this is not the cheapest dog-proof trash can, but it’s certainly among the very best.

12. Best Industrial Grade Design: Rubbermaid Trash Can

Product Ratings

Odor Elimination5/5
Durability 4/5

Dimensions: 20.38 x 18.31 x 32.63 inches | Weight: 30.24 pounds | Capacity: 24 gallons | Brand: Rubbermaid | Material: Alloy Steel

What We Liked

  • Commercially rated for longevity and sturdiness
  • Compliant with infectious waste standards
  • Variety of sizes to choose from

What We Didn’t Like

  • Industrial look
  • Only 3 colors are available
  • The lid does not lock, though it is heavy and closes fully

If you want a super-secure trash can that’s designed to safely accommodate infectious waste, Rubbermaid delivers this commercially-rated bin robust enough for all household purposes.

We found this bin in a red, white, and brushed stainless steel finish. Rubbermaid powder-coated to soften the appearance and make it a trash can that you will want in your home. We like the industrial look of this can.

We saw a range that runs from 7-gallon to 40-gallon capacity. This is the 24-gallon bin, which we thought was ideal for most families. The 7-gallon bin is ideal for bathrooms where the dog likes to root through the trash.

We think that this simple but effective foot pedal serves 2 main purposes. It gave us a hands-free operation and you kept our hands clean. Beyond this, you’ll prevent your dog from getting inside the bin even if you’re away from home.

While the lid is not lockable, this bin’s design and overall solidity mean there’s little chance of even the most adventurous dog compromising this thing. We found that the tightness of the lid kept odors inside and our dogs were uninterested in nosing inside.

13. Best for Small Dogs: Sterilite Trash Can

Product Ratings

Odor Elimination5/5

Dimensions: 17.25 x 13.25 x 25.5 inches | Weight: 9.70 pounds | Capacity: 12.6 gallons | Brand: Steilite | Material: Plastic

What We Liked

  • Uses standard tall kitchen bags
  • Space-saving design
  • Comes with a locking lid

What We Didn’t Like

  • Some dogs can gain entry when the lid is not locked
  • Issues with the lid fitting tightly

Last in our collection of the best trash can designed to keep your dog out is a spacious plastic model from Sterilite.

Well, if you have an aggressive or inquisitive dog, this is not the best choice. We found that aggressive dogs can knock it over and pop the lid right off. It also doesn’t keep dogs out if you forget to lock the lid before you leave the room.

We liked this trash can for smaller and more docile dogs because the locking lid should prevent unwanted behavior. The D-shaped design allows you to position the bin in the corner of your kitchen, ideal if space is at a premium.

You won’t need to shop around for proprietary bags either. Standard 13-gallon trash bags make a neat fit. So, unless you have an especially feisty pup, this trash can should keep him and your rubbish separated.

The Winner

First place for us was the Simplehuman Dual Compartment Recycling Can. This trash was best in class when it came to materials used, lid construction, and security. It gave us consistently high performance with longevity added to the mix.

What to Look for in the Best Dog Proof Trash Cans

While this certainly isn’t the most complex buying decision you’ll encounter as a dog owner, there are a few simple pointers to consider that will simplify things.

Most of the best trash cans are made of stainless steel. Unlike plastic, steel won’t leech in the odor of waste over time and is remarkably durable, meaning it’s highly unlikely your bin will incur any damage. Steel is also usually resistant to picking up smears and fingerprints and is easy to clean.

Many trash cans come with simple lockable lids. This should be more than enough to foil even the smartest dogs.

Automatic trash cans make use of infrared motion sensors. Delay-sensing technology should stop your dog from making his way inside. Pedal bins provide hands-free access while preventing your dog from getting inside. For ways to train your dog, look at our article on the best dog training books.

Odor Elimination

We looked at how well the bins contained odor and if they came with a filter to combat odors.  We explored more ways to eliminate dog smells from your house in this handy guide to keeping your home smelling fresh.

How well does the bin stand up to the rigors of everyday life? We looked for long-lasting sensors, delay sensing technology, and foot pedals on the models we chose to test. Our testing showed some weaknesses in some cans, but we recommended the ones that held up the best.

Honorable Mentions

Here are 3 more options that didn’t make it to our list, but are still worth consideration.

1. Simplehuman Butterfly Lid Bathroom Step Trash Can

Simplehuman delivers again with a bathroom step trash can that is pretty and functional. This trash can fits neatly into a bathroom corner or inside a cabinet and has a butterfly lid design to keep nosey dogs out.

It is not great with odor due to the plastic inner bucket, so we found this works best with light waste. For bathroom trash we preferred the 7-gallon industrial Rubbermaid Trash Can or the 10-gallon Behrens Locking Lid Can.

2. Glad Stainless Steel Step Trash Can with Clorox Odor Protection

Glad and Clorox are two household names with years of experience in home cleaning and neutralizing odors. The step pedal keeps the lid firmly in place, and we loved the Clorox odor protection.

There was no plastic liner, so it’s harder to clean the can when it’s dirty inside. It comes with a ring to hold the trash bag in place, but it was cumbersome to keep the lid open while pulling the trash bag free from the ring.

3. EKO Mirage-T Touchless Rectangular Motion Sensor Trash Can

EKO Mirage-T has a built-in sensor to open and close the lid. It holds regular 13-gallon tall kitchen bags, which is a sufficient capacity for most households and doesn’t require that you special order the bags.

Our main problem with this can is that it doesn’t have a plastic liner so it’s hard to clean the inside of the can when it is dirty. The lack of plastic liner does make the overall can dimensions smaller, so that may be a benefit for smaller kitchens.

Due to the lack of a liner to hold the garbage bag, we chose to recommend the NINESTARS Automatic Trash Can which has the same capacity and features but is easier to keep clean.
