Fiber is equally as necessary as protein, carbs, and lipids in the right amounts.
Dietary fiber is essential for the bacteria and cells lining your dog’s intestines and also absorbs certain toxins, which helps to prevent their entry into circulation.
Owning a dog means that you take care of his food and nutrition, giving him a complete and balanced diet, but it can be tough to find a high-fiber dog food that your dog will eat.
We have picky pups too, so we set out to find and test the highest-rated high fiber dog foods available.
After our testing, we compiled this list of the 5 best high fiber dog foods, plus another 5 that we felt were worth an honorable mention.

How We Chose the Best High Fiber Dog Food

Fiber provides essential nutrients to the bacteria and cells in your dog’s colon, allowing him to thrive. Fiber also prevents certain poisons from entering the bloodstream.
Because not all fiber is made equal, it’s important to understand which types are best for your dog’s whole body.
If your dog is a picky eater, he may not be able to consume all high-fiber dog foods because of his preferences. With a little perseverance, you should be able to discover a high-fiber dog food that your dog will like.
Fiber provides many of the same benefits to dogs as it does to people – it helps the digestive system operate more efficiently.
REMEMBER: It’s important to transition slowly when changing your dog’s food. Quick changes can upset sensitive stomachs.
Another positive of increasing fiber in your dog’s diet is relieving constipation.
Fiber draws water into the gut and contributes to the volume of your dog’s feces, which may aid in the maintenance of smooth digestive function even further.
On the flip side, if your dog eats too much fiber, it may poop more often (and pass gas more than usual).
With all the benefits in mind, we set out to find the best high fiber dog foods that contained quality ingredients.
We looked for brands that put the quality and health of pets first and put a few non-GMO and superfood options on our list for this reason.
As we mentioned, getting a dog to transition to a different food can be challenging. To combat this, we looked for dog foods with flavors we know dogs will love, like lamb and chicken.
After our testing, these 5 were our favorites. Let’s hop into it!

- With a variety of flavors, dogs never get bored of it
What We Didn’t Like
- Watch for signs of sensitivity, especially in younger dogs. While ingredients are blander than others, transitioning too quickly can lead to an upset stomach.
Most dogs get enough fiber in their food because they have enough fiber-containing ingredients. On the other hand, some breeds may need more fiber than other breeds. You should talk to your veterinarian first to see if your dog’s food needs more fiber.
CAUTION: A lot of fiber at once can make your dog bloat and have diarrhea, so be careful. Striking the right balance is hard, and a gradual transition to the new food is vital.
Our dogs responded well when it was time to test this food.
They transitioned to it faster than other foods, probably because the main ingredient is turkey in a grain-free formula, making it easier on their stomachs.
We love that this formula has much less fat than the original formula and is high in protein and high fiber. This helps dogs to have healthy digestion while building and maintaining lean muscles.

The Winner
Overall, we loved Nutro Natural Choice Dry Dog Food – For Dogs Aged 1+. Nutro’s dry formula is made entirely of non-GMO ingredients from trusted sources.
The first ingredient is real lamb, which is what gives this dish its protein, while fiber is boosted with healthy brown rice.
Honorable Mentions
Here’s a brief look at the 5 best high fiber dog foods we tested that didn’t quite make our list.
1. Solid Gold Grain-Free Dog Food – Considered for Dry grain-free formula
Though not the most budget-friendly option, with Solid Gold, your dog gets a lot of nutrition, and the puffy kibble pieces are low in fat and calories.
The high fiber content makes sure that your dog gets a lot of gut-benefitting nutrients.
Our dogs prefer the flavor of Wellness CORE Dry Dog Food so it took a spot in our list of top picks.
2. Holistic Select Dry Dog Food – Considered for weight-management issues
This is a fiber-dense combination. You’ll reduce your pet’s chance of colon cancer while also helping him keep a regular bowel movement.
Flaxseed isn’t only a good source of fiber, but it also has skin and coat advantages. The high fatty acid content will give his coat a lovely gloss.
Prebiotics and probiotics help to regulate digestion.
While we love this formula overall, our dogs preferred other kibbles with The Missing Link All-Natural Dog Supplement sprinkled over the top for added nutrition.
3. Nutrisca Grain-Free Dog Food – Considered for Grain-free
The grain-free blend from Nutrisca is a cost-effective way to give your dog more fiber. The salmon is the star, despite the fact that it’s significantly less costly than a complete meal.
While we love the nutritional benefits of salmon, some of our dogs got nasty fish breath, so we preferred the Nutro Natural Choice Dry Dog Food – For Dogs Aged 1+.
4. Fromm Gold Coast Grain-Free Dog Food – Considered for Dry formula
At Fromm Gold Coast, grain-free meals start with whitefish and salmon, which are also produced without wheat.
This food helps you regulate your dog’s weight while still providing him with the nutrition he needs. Get a 4-pound sample bag if you’re not sure whether your dog will like the food.
Our dogs weren’t fans of the food, so we didn’t push them to test it beyond the 4-pound bag. They definitely preferred the Wellness CORE Dry Dog Food.
5. Royal Canin Fiber Response Dog Food – Considered for Gastrointestinal response formula
Thanks to Royal Canin, we can get high-quality high-fiber dog food, though it must be prescribed by a veterinarian.
We got that prescription for our dogs with severe anal gland issues and gave this food a try.
The results were mixed. We were happy with what we saw in our dogs’ stools, but our dogs weren’t totally thrilled with the flavor of the kibble.
It works well for many dogs, and we have friends who love their Royal Canin. However, it didn’t place in our top 5 because it needs a prescription so it’s a bit hard to get.
Instead, we chose to recommend Instinct Raw Boost Dog Food which is also high fiber and can be purchased in-store or online.
