Best Dog Food Storage Containers of 2022 (9 Tried & Tested!)

One of the things we find to be the most tiresome aspects of pet ownership is keeping up with our pets’ food and kibble needs.

Buying dog food in bulk is cheaper over the long term and better for the environment because it uses less packaging and waste. You’ll also spend more money over time buying small bags at the grocery store rather than in bulk.

However, the problem with buying in bulk is that keeping a lot of dry dog food on hand means it will go bad quickly if it is left exposed to the air and not eaten quickly. That is why we tested the best dog food storage containers to help keep dog food fresher longer.

Our goal was to find sturdy, pet-proof containers that can hold large amounts of bulk dog food and keep it fresh until it is all eaten. We chose 13 of the top-rated dog food storage bins, put them to the test with our favorite kibbles, and 9 came out on top.

3 Reasons We Tested Dog Food Storage Products

Best dog food storage containers
Dog food storage containers keep food fresher for longer.

Before we did our testing, we wanted to find out why we needed food storage containers for our dog food. Our research revealed three important reasons:

  1. They keep our dog food fresher for longer
  2. They keep unwanted pests out of the food
  3. They are a portable and versatile storage solution

Dogs are notoriously fussy when it comes to their food, particularly dogs with a sensitive stomach, and if you store their food improperly, there is a better chance your furry friend will turn up his nose at the texture or taste of stale kibble.

Small pests like mice and beetles that may enter your home will find it impossible to access food storage containers, so your dog will be safe from the bacteria and disease they can transmit.

By storing all pet food in well-sealed storage containers, you can eliminate the smells that draw many pests into the home, keeping your home safe and sanitary.

Finally, dog food storage containers are perfect for small storage areas because they are portable and versatile. Bags of dog food can spill, are hard to move, and take up a lot of room. Kibble stored in sealed containers takes up less room and keeps the mess away.

How We Rated Our Food Storage Containers

When we began looking at the many available food storage options, there were some functional traits that we found to be the most important. Three main things rose to the top during our testing:

  • Materials
  • Airtight seal
  • Overall dimensions versus capacity

Plastic was the number one material because those containers are affordable and durable. We checked our products closely to make sure they didn’t contain any BPA, which is toxic to dogs, and no other known contaminants in the plastic.

Stainless steel containers are more expensive than plastic but even more durable and won’t react with your dog’s food causing strange flavors. They’re easy to clean, look stylish, and don’t pick up smells like plastic containers do.

We also made sure the dog food storage containers on our list came with a fully airtight seal to keep kibble fresh for weeks on end.

While you should check that the containers you’re considering offer adequate storage, also make sure you have storage space to accommodate the container.

Once we laid the foundation for what is most important in dog food storage containers, we chose 13 top-rated containers and put them to the test. These are 9 are our top picks, and we’ll tell you why.

Best Dog Food Storage Containers

1. Best Overall: Iris Airtight Pet Food Container

Product Ratings

Materials5/5
Airtight seal5/5
Dimensions vs. capacity5/5

Capacity: 12 and 33 quarts | Material: Plastic | Brand: Iris | Size: 5 x 10.8 x 18.6 inches

What We Liked

  • 3-piece storage set
  • Variety of color choices
  • Casters for rollable storage
  • Scoop for easy serving

What We Didn’t Like

  • Some issues with quality control according to reviews, but the set we tested was great

Out of all of the storage products we tested, the Iris Airtight Pet Food Container was hands-down our favorite. We tested the 3-piece set composed of a pair of containers, one with a 12-quart capacity and the other holding 33 quarts of food.

To put these dimensions into perspective, they would give you the ability to store up to 10 pounds of dog food in the smaller container and up to 25 pounds in the larger container.

We found it very easy to stack the smaller tub neatly on top of the larger one, which would save space in a crowded storage. They also come in a wide choice of color accents to brighten up your room.

Dog food is heavy, but the Iris containers have casters to easily move them around without straining. We found it easy to measure our pup’s food with the included scoop – a nice touch.

For a great all-rounder from a brand you can trust, you can’t beat these dog food storage containers from Iris.

2. Best Air-tight Container: Gamma2 Vittles Vault Food Storage Container

Product Ratings

Materials5/5
Airtight seal4.8/5
Dimensions vs. capacity5/5

Capacity: 40 pounds | Material: HDPE Plastic | Brand: Gamma2 | Size: 12 x 12 x 16.8 inches

What We Liked

  • Stackable and completely airtight
  • Impact-resistant plastic that is free of contaminants
  • Threaded locking system controls moisture and keeps pests out
  •  Large enough to fit food for large dog breeds

What We Didn’t Like

  • There is one color and style which isn’t super attractive
  • The larger size is heavy when full

This product came in at a very close second with us because it is a robust food storage solution that won’t break the bank.

We found it spacious enough to accommodate 40 pounds of dry dog food, making it a great fit for larger breeds and hungry canines. We also found that the innovative sealing system kept all moisture away from the dog food.

We saw in the reviews that some customers complained about ants making their way inside the container. We did not have this problem and found it sealed out pests really well. When screwed on properly, the lid is completely airtight.

We also love that the containers can stack on top of each other, making them perfect for multiple pets who eat different food or dividing up huge quantities of bulk kibble.

3. Best Slimline Container: Buddeez Plastic Pet Food Storage Container

Product Ratings

Materials5/5
Airtight seal4.8/5
Dimensions vs. capacity5/5

Capacity: 32 pounds | Material: Plastic | Brand: Gamma2 | Size: 19 x 10 x 20 inches

What We Liked

  • Stackable storage solution in multiple sizes
  • Food-grade plastic with no BPA
  • Flip lid and easy pouring spout

What We Didn’t Like

  • We wish it had a second handle

We think the Buddeez is a great slimline pet food storage container. This 32-quart unit is slimline and space-saving, yet gives you enough capacity for over 20 pounds of kibble. That is impressive storage for a small container.

The robust plastic is also free of BPA, so you won’t have any niggling concerns about contaminants leaching into your dog’s food.

When we tested this product we liked how the lid flipped up and the spout was designed to streamline pouring. Every element of this container is intelligently designed and well-engineered. We only wish it had a second handle on the pouring side to make it easier to pour the last of the kibble.

As with many brands producing pet food storage containers, you can explore the Buddeez range for plenty of larger and smaller tubs if this doesn’t make the most appropriate fit for your dog’s kibble.

4. Best Container for Multiple Dogs: Gamma2 Vittles Vault Pet Food Container

Product Ratings

Materials5/5
Airtight seal4.9/5
Dimensions vs. capacity4.9/5

Capacity: 50 pounds | Material: Plastic | Brand: Gamma2 | Size: 14 x 14 x 20 inches

What We Liked

  • Sealing system for maximum freshness
  • Ideal for storing large volumes of food
  • Airtight seal locks out air, water, and pests

What We Didn’t Like

  • Lack of casters or wheels for mobility

Next up in our collection of the best dog food storage containers comes another entry from Gamma2’s Vittles Vault line. This time we had our testers with multiple dogs test this product because the container is large enough to store up to 50 pounds of dry dog food. They have a model that can store 80 pounds.

This makes it a great choice if you have several dogs at home, or you own larger breeds that plow through bag after bag of food. It is made from HDPE plastic that is free from phthalates and BPA.

The patented airtight system keeps the oxygen away from your dog food as well as water and any other pests. We love the way these containers keep the food fresh and dry.

Our only real complaint is that they are so large that they are nearly impossible to move once filled with food. So if we filled it and then wanted to move it we had to use a hand-truck. Included wheels or casters would be a nice touch on these huge bins.

5. Best Mobile Option: IRIS Airtight Pet Food Storage Container

Product Ratings

Materials5/5
Airtight seal4.9/5
Dimensions vs. capacity4.8/5

Capacity: 67 quarts | Material: Plastic | Brand: IRIS | Size: 3 x 14.8 x 25.3 inches

What We Liked

  • Wheeled unit for ease of transportation
  • Airtight with snap lock
  • Holds up to 55 pounds of dry dog food

What We Didn’t Like

  • Some smell seems to escape through the porous plastic

Next up in our search for the best dog food containers comes another entry from the inimitable Iris. How does this unit shape up?

When our package arrived, we found some casters inside the container. These install easily underneath allowing you to wheel your food around rather than straining your back with a full storage bin. This might be our favorite feature of this storage bin.

The airtight lid provides the ideal environment for storing your kibble and treats. You can put up to 55 pounds of dry food inside making this a great fit for owners of large dogs.

The only real gripe we could unearth with this container was a few isolated complaints about the smell of dog food escaping through the porous plastic. If you’re storing this in the garage or storage room, it isn’t a problem. If the bin is in the kitchen it may raise complaints.

If you want a compact, hygienic, and mobile solution to dog food storage, we’d strongly suggest checking out Iris’s line of kibble storage bins.

6. Compact Storage: Tiovery Pet Food Storage Container

Product Ratings

Materials5/5
Airtight seal4.9/5
Dimensions vs. capacity4.7/5

Capacity: 5 pounds | Material: Plastic | Brand: Tiovery | Size: 7 x 3.15 x 11.8 inches

What We Liked

  • 4 seal buckles for airtight freshness
  • Spout and measuring cup included
  • Food-grade BPA-free plastic

What We Didn’t Like

  • Spout seems undersized for dog kibble
  • Not efficient for large dog breeds

When we tested this storage option, we were pleasantly surprised to find that this budget option by Tiovery brings a highly effective and compact dog food storage container.

This option is ideal for smaller dogs and gives you enough space for 3.5 pounds of dry dog food or kibble. While that amount isn’t considered to be a bulk amount, it will help you store smaller amounts for convenient daily dispensing.

The container is made from plastic with no BPA, no phthalates, and no other toxins harmful to your dog, and four buckles serve to seal the lid tight so your dog food will stay fresher for longer.

We also found that the spout makes serving your food super simple, and there’s also a measuring cup so you can precisely portion your pup’s food and treats.

Not only is this dog food storage container extremely cheap, but you’ll also benefit from a 100% satisfaction guarantee. If you’re not completely happy, request a replacement or a refund with no questions asked.

7. Best Feeder and Storage Combo: IRIS Elevated Feeder

Product Ratings

Materials5/5
Airtight seal4.9/5
Dimensions vs. capacity4/5

Capacity: 2×2 quart bowls | Material: Stainless steel | Brand: IRIS | Size: 5 x 14.2 x 15 inches

What We Liked

  • Pair of elevated serving bowls keep food and water up high
  • Ideal for large breeds
  •  Fully airtight sealed storage container

What We Didn’t Like

  • It can be tipped over, though this doesn’t happen much
  • The bowls are in the lid so they have to be moved to get to the food

We found another great container from Iris up next in the form of this nifty elevated feeder.

What we liked about testing this option is that we found small, medium or large sizes to suit the size of your pup. We personally tested the large, which came with a pair of removable 2-quart bowls.

The bowls are stainless steel so they are easy to clean and won’t ever tarnish or rust. The storage container itself will store up to 47 pounds of food.

If you have a large dog at home or several smaller dogs and the need to keep lots of dry food on hand, the proper storage is essential if you don’t want your house reeking of dog food.

We also found the seal is airtight, so you won’t find your dog food going stale even if you store it for several weeks. The snap locks should also help to keep any small pests like ants out of your stash of dog kibble.

Despite the generous capacity, the overall dimensions of this container are space-saving making it a neat fit for smaller areas.

Our only complaint is that removing the lid to access food means also disturbing the food bowls. This can be a messy juggle if there is water in one bowl or anxious dogs waiting to eat because they may dive into the bin while the feeding station lid is off.

8. Best for Long-lasting Quality: Bergan Smart Storage Container

Product Ratings

Materials5/5
Airtight seal4.9/5
Dimensions vs. capacity4.7/5

Capacity: 50 pounds | Material: Plastic | Brand: Bergan | Size: 19 x 19.6 x 18.5 inches

What We Liked

  • Gasket seals for total freshness
  • Multiple sizes
  • Stackable storage solution

What We Didn’t Like

  • The overall size is a bit bulky

When you’re hunting for the best dog food storage containers, you’ll come across plenty of options from Bergan. We found this option to be one of the best.

This smart storage system gives adequate room for 50 pounds of food, enough capacity for several dogs or larger breeds. If this size doesn’t suit, check out one of the other models with less interior capacity.

The long-lasting plastic is free of BPA so you don’t need to worry about any contaminants making their way into your pup’s food and treats.

As you’d expect from a storage bin of this capacity, the container is quite bulky and reasonably heavy, too. In return, you’ll get enough room for several bags of dog food.

If you need to use more than one Bergan container, these units stack neatly one on top of the other to save space. Though they do stack, the lower units won’t be accessible because the lids will be pinned down by the containers on top.

You get a spacious opening on top of the container so you won’t be fiddling around when it’s time to serve up food. We love the flip-open top that makes it easy to scoop food out.

Bergan’s dog food storage container is one of the most durable and versatile on the market and should work well for most dog owners.

9. Best for Apartments: Richell Pet Stuff Tower

Product Ratings

Materials5/5
Airtight seal4.9/5
Dimensions vs. capacity3/5

Capacity: 8 pounds | Material: Plastic | Brand: Richell | Size: 12 x 9 x 15 inches

What We Liked

  • Snap-lock lids
  • Tip-out bins safe space and make easy access to food and treats
  • Foot pedal opens the lower bin hands-free
  • Made in the USA

What We Didn’t Like

  • Container lids are prone to breaking with rough use

If you live in an apartment or you have a cramped kitchen, there are plenty of innovative storage solutions to help you store your dog food without overtaking the space.

Richell’s Pet Stuff Tower gives you two spacious containers ideal for servicing several pets.

Each of the food bins holds 8 pounds of dry dog food. This might not be enough if you have larger breeds, but it works well for smaller dogs. We kept the dog food in a huge bulk container in the garage and then stored smaller amounts for everyday use in this storage tower.

A 1.5-cup food scoop comes with the tower. We love that we can access the bottom bin using the foot pedal while the top bin slides easily out.

As any dog owner knows, the accessories you need for your pup are endless. Hooks on the side of this container are ideal for keeping leashes, collars, and anything else you need close at hand.

We would like to see the quality of the lids improved, but in all other respects, this is an outstanding dog food storage container from a brand you can trust.

We think this variety makes it aesthetically pleasing for any kitchen or storage area. Add in high-quality plastic and a competitive price, and you have the perfect dog food storage solution.

How to Choose the Best Dog Food Storage Containers

Now that you have our top choices for food storage containers, you can head out and find the best one for you. The first thing you want to verify is that the material is BPA-free, which is toxic to dogs

You also want to verify the containers are airtight so that they keep your dog’s food fresh while also protecting it from any critters that may try to crawl inside. The overall size of your containers depends on the size of your dog’s appetite.

If you are buying a container for a puppy, you also want to keep in mind that your small furry friend will not stay small forever and will soon switch from puppy food to adult food. Therefore, buy a container for the dog he will grow to be, not the pup he is now.

You should consider storage solutions that make the most out of limited space if you have a smaller kitchen, such as stackable or slim options. Larger containers with wheels are perfect for moving from room to room without breaking your back.
