How We Chose the Best Personalized Dog Collars

Cute dog wearing a collar
Personalized dog collars allow you to put a special flare on your dog’s accessories.

Even though reviewing dog collars may sound like a no-brainer, there are still a few things to consider when making your purchase.

Comfort

What’s the use of having a safe pup if he or she isn’t living comfortably in their collar?

Most of their time is spent wearing the collar indoors instead of being lost outside. Comfort is key around the clock.

Flat collars should work in most cases, however, martingale collars (also referred to as limited-slip or non-slip collars) are also good options.

We’ve also reviewed the best martingale collars if you have breeds like Whippets, Greyhounds, and Salukis. They’re also generally good for breeds with long necks and small heads.

When adjusting their collar, the general rule is that you should have it snug and high around their neck.

However, making it too tight might hurt them when you’re walking them or otherwise. Ensure that you can fit two fingers between their neck and the collar.

Waterproof

Take off your dog’s collar when it’s time for a bath or a pool day to increase the life of the collar.

Despite that, we understand that sometimes getting water on the collar is inevitable.

Fortunately, most of the collars on this list are nylon, leather, or PU leather.

If they get wet, you should probably still hang them to dry, or they may start to stink.

Safety

When worse comes to worst, your dog should be easily identifiable and have your contact info clear as day.

Julius K-9 goes more into detail about how collars generally aid in safety and training. We’ll also be considering that with our recommendations.

Best Personalized Dog Collars Reviewed

1. Best Overall: LovelyDog Reflective Dog Collar

Product Ratings

Affordability 5/5
Comfort 5/5
Effectiveness 4/5
Sizing5/5
Quality 4/5

Sizes: 6″ to 24″ (Back Length) | Closure Type: Button | Brand: YOUYIXUN | Material: Nylon | Dogs: Small to Large Breeds

What We Liked

  • Adjustable sizing doesn’t obscure personalized information on the collar
  • Reflection works very well in the dark

What We Didn’t Like

  • Reflective material frays after a little while
  • Loosens up after some time

While LovelyDog’s collar doesn’t have the vibrant color palette that other collars on this list do, their reflective strips perform impeccably.

A top contender on this list, this collar is perfect for that nighttime walk. Not only will it keep them safe, but it’ll also make sure the dog is the highlight of any stroll.

We think this collar is best suited for nighttime use.

It works well for all-day wear, though we had to readjust it every once in a while, still only a minor inconvenience.

2. Best Collar Material: Ayisoro Personalized Dog Collar

Product Ratings

Affordability 5/5
Comfort 4/5
Effectiveness 4/5
Sizing4/5
Quality 3/5

Sizes: 10″ to 24.5″ (Back Length) | Closure Type: Buckle | Brand: Ayisoro | Material: PU Leather | Dogs: Small to XXL Breeds

What We Liked

  • Comfortable
  • Broad selection of colors to choose from
  • Can be purchased as a set with a matching leash

What We Didn’t Like

  • Runs a little small, contrary to size recommendations
  • Took some time for us to receive the collar

Ayisoro’s personalized dog collars deliver a great alternative if the Youyixun option is too expensive.

It provides many of the same functions and has some areas where it shines through.

With all these colors, you’ll get to choose the right color collar for your pup. It’s also very comfortable and durable, made from PU leather.

One negative takeaway is that we had to wait a while to get this product.

We understand that we’re somewhat spoiled nowadays with 2-day shipping, but this took a week and a half to get to us.

As recommended, we also ordered a size up, which was still on the snug side, so the size chart could use a little adjusting.

3. Best Genuine Leather: YOUYIXUN Personalized Dog Collar

Product Ratings

Affordability 3/5
Comfort 5/5
Effectiveness 4/5
Sizing5/5
Quality 4/5

Sizes: 9.5″ to 22.5″ (Back Length) | Closure Type: Buckle | Brand: YOUYIXUN | Material: Leather | Dogs: Small to Extra Large Breeds

What We Liked

  • Color doesn’t bleed
  • Laser-engraved metal buckles
  • Retro-style

What We Didn’t Like

  • The clasp could use some improvement

This collar is as good as any on the market. It has a classic look that looks good on any dog, complete with four beautiful color choices.

The leather material is high-end quality and is comfortable for dogs to wear.

The only thing that could be improved is their clasps. Even though it’s metal, it’s not as secure as some other collars on this list.

Youyuxin describes their product as a quick-release collar, which may not be best for dogs that are known to tug or get easily riled up in the presence of passing dogs.

The good news is that they’re constantly working on their products and they have improved their stitching. They’re also known for their spectacular customer service and speedy responses.

4. Best for Smaller Dogs: M JJYPET Personalized Reflective Collar

Product Ratings

Affordability 4/5
Comfort 5/5
Effectiveness 4/5
Sizing3/5
Quality 4/5

Sizes: 8″ to 20″ (Back Length) | Closure Type: Hook and Loop| Brand: M JJYPET | Material: Microfiber | Dogs: Extra Small to Large Breeds

What We Liked

  • Hook and loop closure
  • Comfortable and durable microfiber
  • Come with additional personalized ID Tag

What We Didn’t Like

  • Loose end of collar sticks out

This best personalized dog collars option is perfect for pocket-sized pooches.

While it goes up to an XL size, their range is limited and only goes up to 20 inches and may be a little bit too small on larger breeds.

This brand is marketed to cats, as well, which could be why they’re focusing on shorter collars and collars for small dogs.

Overall, it’s a solid collar that comes with a free engraved ID tag as well as personalized collar engraving. It has a reflective band that makes your dog easy to spot.

Our only concern is that the end of the collar sticks out of the loop and could get caught on something. It would benefit from another loop to hold in place.

5. Best Style: TagMe Dog Collar

Product Ratings

Affordability 4/5
Comfort 5/5
Effectiveness 4/5
Sizing5/5
Quality 3/5

Sizes: 9″ to 23″ (Back Length) | Closure Type: Buckle | Brand: TagMe | Material: Leather | Dogs: Small to Extra Large Breeds

What We Liked

  • Has a blend of regular and PU leather
  • Stainless-steel ID plate complete with laser engraving

What We Didn’t Like

  • Doesn’t work as a puppy collar
  • Thin nameplate bends easily

Easily the most stylish of any collar, in our opinion. The unique braiding can make any dog the star of the show.

In addition, while the collar is great, so is the company.

If the size isn’t suitable for your pup, TagMe will exchange with no hassle. Then you’ll be on your merry way with your dog dressed to impress.

The ID plate is a little thin and can be bent if given some pressure. The braiding can also come apart if your dog chews on it or plays rough with other dogs.

We found it’s best suited for calmer dogs if you want this collar to last.

6. Best for Large Text: GoTags Personalized Dog Collar

Product Ratings

Affordability 3/5
Comfort 5/5
Effectiveness 3/5
Sizing5/5
Quality 4/5

Sizes: 8″ to 26″ (Back Length) | Closure Type: Snap | Brand: GoTags | Material: Nylon | Dogs: Small to Extra Large Breeds

What We Liked

  • 5 collar colors and 15 embroidery colors
  • Great size range
  • Comfy, durable

What We Didn’t Like

  • Not enough space to accommodate the large text

GoTags is known for its solid nylon collars.

The 15 embroidery options are also great to make any collar unique and attention-drawing.

Part of the reason that this collar is eye-catching is that the text is also very large and visible from afar.

The major design problem that keeps it from being higher on this list is that the text is too big for the collar.

Most of the time, adjusting the collar will cover up either the name or the phone number.

Not only that, the logo takes up a lot of key real estate that could be used for personalization.

A lot of users agree that their decrease in quality doesn’t justify their recent price increase. We knocked off some points from this collar for those reasons.

The Winner

The LovelyDog Reflective Dog Collar emerges as the obvious pick for our winner.

While it may not be the most stylish collar selection on our list, it shines in more ways than just the collar.

At the end of the day, the most important factor in a dog collar is to keep your dog safe, which this collar is specialized to do.

It does everything well and won’t cost you a pretty penny in the process.

Owning a dog is an expensive (and totally worth it) responsibility and LovelyDog’s affordability inched out every other collar as the winner.

How to Choose the Best Personalized Dog Collar

Similar to how everyone has a different kind of dog, there are dozens of choices for personalized dog collars.

It comes down to what kind of dog you have and what their (and your) tendencies are.

Suppose you take your dog out during the night time due to schedule or your dog’s preference, a reflective collar is necessary for safety.

A dog that likes to play with other dogs they encounter will need durable and comfortable material that’ll hold up against horseplay.

Nameplates can be tricky when it comes to the lifespan of collars, as well.

Be sure to read the reviews and comments about sizing before ordering.

While you can reference the sizing chart, it’s a good idea to see what others are saying about a collar’s fit.

Thankfully, most of the companies reviewed have stellar customer service and kindly exchange the collar when needed.

Honorable Mentions

Here’s a brief look at the 4 options that didn’t make our best personalized dog collars list.

1. Joytale Personalized Dog Collar – Considered for Best Overall

Joytale’s nylon is worth a look and vibrant colors accent dogs perfectly. That said, its quality isn’t as strong as the others on this list.

If you specifically want a nylon collar, due to a vegetarian/vegan lifestyle or preference, consider the LovelyDog Reflective Dog Collar.

2. Didog Leather Collar – Considered for Larger Dogs

Didog’s leather collars work well on bigger dogs because of their classic look and no-nonsense belt-like style.

Unfortunately, parts of the collar start to degrade over time, so you’re better off looking at the Ayisoro Personalized Dog Collar, which has a similar size range.

3. Custom Catch Personalized Dog Collar – Considered for Overall

If you want a collar that sports a Midwestern country style, Custom Catch has got you covered with its color variety and endearing font.

Sadly, it sacrifices quality for style, while YOUYIXUN Personalized Dog Collar doesn’t skimp on either, so we think it’s a better choice.

4. GoTags Personalized Dog Collar with Nameplate – Considered for Best Material

GoTags makes quality collars that almost had two representatives on our list.

Stick with the GoTags Personalized Dog Collar though, because what kept this particular GoTags collar from making our top picks list was the faulty nameplate that isn’t the most secure.
