There are many factors to consider when buying the right dog bed.
While size, comfort, and quality are all important (don’t worry, we will cover that too), there are a few characteristics that you might have not considered such as if it is washable or not.
We may not need to remind you about the importance of having a good dog bed, but if you are curious check out the link.
While your furry friend is not only adorable, they do carry in a lot of dirt and germs from the outside. Your dog’s bed needs to be washable.
With that in mind, the ideal washable dog bed should either be 100% machine washable or have a removable and washable cover. A clean home is a happy home for your furball.

How We Chose the Best Washable Dog Bed

Narrowing down the best washable dog beds is not an easy task. Dog beds are a dime a dozen (and not all of them are high quality).
While there are plenty of options online, we looked at the most reputable and popular brands.
We also considered what people are buying (and rating) on Amazon and other websites.
Though it may seem complicated, the best washable dog beds tend to have two defining features: that it works as a bed and that it is washable. Fur babies deserve nothing but the best.
The product ratings below will make it easier to follow but there are some specifics that we observed.
Washing and Care Guidelines
Caring for the bed is the reason why we’re all here. How does it clean and what are you able to clean?
Some beds are 100% machine washable while others have a removable cover.
Additionally, how does it dry? Convenience and maintenance don’t always go hand in hand but we will consider both.
Filling
Memory foam mattresses work best for your elder or arthritic dog. As for your pups, egg crate foam and orthopedic foams work just as well.
Base
The base of the bed needs to hold up wherever you’re putting it. Bonus points if it doesn’t skid when your dog leaps out of it.
Durability
Determining how the bed washes is one thing, but how it holds up after washes is another.
In addition to having a bed that braves a wash or five, having a generally durable bed is another thing we take into consideration.
Scratching, chewing, and digging have to be considered as the beds are for the dogs after all.

Sizes: 30” x 20” x 3” (Medium) | Brand: Furhaven | Material: Polyester | What’s Washable: Both foam and cover | Dogs: Small to Extra Large Breeds
What We Liked
- Large selection of colors
- Bolsters on two sides, making for easy access
- Orthopedic foam allows for good support
What We Didn’t Like
- Bolsters flatten over time
While Furhaven has many different models with their own perks and designs, we liked their L Shaped Chaise Bed.
Its egg-crate orthopedic foam base fully supports the body and the fluffy bolsters cushion whatever parts of our dog rest on it (since they sleep so many different ways).
We came to appreciate the L shape of this bed more as it provides both comfort and space.
As for washing, it is super easy to just unzip and put it into the washing machine.
Furhaven suggests that the best way to dry it is to line dry or tumble dry on low.
Since our dogs were trying to get back onto the bed as fast as a canine-ly possible, we put it in the dryer on low. It came out looking and feeling fine.

Sizes: 30” x 30” (Medium) | Brand: Best Friends by Sheri | Material: Polyester | What’s Washable: Whole bed for small, Cover for Medium to XL | Dogs: Small to Extra Large Breeds
What We Liked
- Dirt and water-resistant bottom
- Colors match well in any environment
- Donut appearance encourages snuggling, excels at calming dogs
What We Didn’t Like
- Only the small version of the bed is fully washable (M-XL sizes have a removable cover)
- Middle area is a little flat
Opening the packaging on this bed was a little bit of a ride. It came vacuum-sealed so it first appeared flat.
The provided instructions told us to put it in the dryer and it more closely resembled the picture.
The colors also match any room and don’t look gaudy.
We have had a couple of guests that thought it was a bean bag chair for kids but our dogs quickly corrected them.
No one is allowed on the bed but them (and they’ll be sure to let you know).
Removing the washable cover from the bed worked fine but we do wish that the quality was consistent across the board. Only the small-sized beds are fully washable.

Sizes: 25” x 32” x 7″ (Medium) | Brand: K&H | Material: Rubber, Fabric | What’s Washable: Cover | Dogs: Medium to Extra Large Breeds (Small is Sold-Out)
What We Liked
- Great for outdoors
- Optimal airflow
- Elevation gets rid of “padding loses effectiveness over time” problem
What We Didn’t Like
- Lack of filling doesn’t make it the comfiest
- Not the best option for XL dogs
This pet cot is an amazing trade-off to the traditional dog bed. Elevated dog beds have a bunch of perks for dogs that may need special care.
It is used mostly for dogs to lay outdoors, but we thought it was adaptable indoors as well.
Plus it’s always a joy to see our dogs elevated so it’s like their eye level with us.
Another focal point of this cot is that it lacks the filling but doesn’t sacrifice that much in terms of comfort.
However, like what is listed above, it just doesn’t match up to a more fabric-based bed (which your furry friend might not mind).
Overall, it is easy to clean. The cover is machine washable and the sides are easy to wipe down.
If this is more of an outdoor bed, you can hose it off outside. Be sure to wipe down the legs and sides still. Some users have noted some light rusting.

Sizes: 23” x 23” x 8″ (Medium) | Brand: Bedsure | Material: Faux Fur, Microfiber, Wood, Plush | What’s Washable: Whole Bed | Dogs: Small to Medium Breeds
What We Liked
- Air loft fibers make for warming material
- Whole bed is washable
What We Didn’t Like
- Fibers shed a little
- Bed might be too big for some washers
This is most likely the best bed option for your little guy.
Another donut bed that keeps your pet warm on the coldest nights.
The faux fur and air loft fibers combine to make an ideal bed. Additionally, the anti-slip padding makes it suitable for any floor.
The fibers do come off fairly easily so you have to be wary about when you wash the bed.

What We Liked
- Hidden zipper protects curious dogs
- Large cushion and slip-resistant features are good for older or active dogs
What We Didn’t Like
- Lack of bolsters or donut shape don’t support the head as much
- Not the best option for XL dogs
Oftentimes, your dogs aren’t all that high maintenance.
All you can wish for them is to have the same comfort that you experience. Why not give them their own huge pillow?
Magic Dog’s Orthopedic Foam Bed gets the job done. It is waterproof and the washable cover is removable. Featuring a hidden zipper.
For most dogs, this bed supplies them with plenty of room to stretch their limbs after a long day of playing.
One thing is that while it is scratch-resistant, it definitely is not bite-resistant. If you have a power chewer, it is best to look elsewhere.

Reusability | 4/5 |
Quality | 5/5 |
Sizes: 31” x 22” x 4″ (Medium) | Brand: JOYELF | Material: Polyester, Fabric | What’s Washable: Cover | Dogs: Small to XXL Breeds
What We Liked
- Top of the line materials
- Surrounded by bolsters
- It comes with a free squeaker toy
What We Didn’t Like
- The foam smell lingers for awhile
After opening the packaging and letting this bed fill out we thought that this looks like an absolute fortress compared to the other beds.
The beds are quite large (maybe a reason to offset the cost, which is pricier than most of the options here).
Having the bolsters surround the bed is also a nice touch if you have a couple of dogs who like to share beds.
And yes, we did notice a foam smell. After airing out, the smell faded quite a bit.
Like most of the beds, the cover is removable and washable. Unfortunately, since the cover is so large and the description suggests air drying it, the process takes a while.

Sizes: 24″ | Brand: Midwest | Material: Polyester | What’s Washable: Whole Bed | Dogs: Small to Large Breeds
What We Liked
- Crate-compatible
- Lightweight
- Wide array of sizes
What We Didn’t Like
- Bottom surface wears off
This Midwest Homes dog bed gets the job done. It doesn’t have a lot of extra features, but our dogs did not complain about this bed.
It is marketed as a travel bed as they emphasize how it fits perfectly in crates.
We didn’t use crates but its simple shape doesn’t tell us otherwise. The lightweight aspect is perfect for transportation though!
The entire bed is machine washable on a cold, gentle cycle.

Product Ratings
Affordability | 4/5 |
Comfort | 4/5 |
Effectiveness | 4/5 |
Reusability | 4/5 |
Quality | 4/5 |
Sizes: 35″ x 22″ x 3″ (Large) | Brand: MIXJOY | Material: Polyester, Fabric | What’s Washable: Cover | Dogs: Large to Extra Large Breeds
What We Liked
- Very large and spacious beds
- Memory foam is comfy and supportive
- Waterproof
What We Didn’t Like
- Not good for chewers or diggers
- Needs two days to become restore size from vacuum sealing
An all-around great bed. It is a large bed that suits most dogs with space to spare.
Even though it is marketed towards larger dogs, any dog would be happy with this bed (it’s funny seeing our smaller dogs enjoy this massive cushion).
The memory foam is another great touch as our dogs gravitate towards their bed throughout the whole day.
It’s perfect for arthritic dogs as the lack of bolsters allows them to get in and out without much hassle.
The waterproof cover also shields the bed from any accidents they may have. Its waterproof nature does not make the bed any less washable, which is a huge positive.
However, the bed is not the most durable. Most big dogs don’t know their strength so that’s why it gets a little bit of a lower rating.
Otherwise, this would be a nearly perfect bed.

The Winner
The hands-down winner of the best washable bed is the Furhaven Dog Bed.
Improving on their earlier designs proved them to be among the top dog bed brands.
Combining all the great features into one spectacular bed that any canine companion will appreciate.

How to Choose the Best Washable Dog Bed
Before we get started on the standard stuff, please consider the following to ensure your special pup gets his or her special bed.
- If your dog has arthritis or any kind of joint problems, beds that focus on support are the way to go. Check out our article on the best beds for arthritic dogs.
- If you have an older dog, you know that they may be spending more time sleeping than anything else. In any case, a bed that is easier to enter and exit from is crucial. A waterproof bed may also be necessary as older dogs tend to have accidents every once in a while.
- Maybe your dog is a power chewer? No sweat. Heavy-duty dog beds are also covered in indestructible dog beds.

What Size Breed of Dog Do You Have
Matching the size of your dog with an appropriately sized bed is one mandatory step in superb dog and bed synergy.
Luckily, most of the dog beds will come with descriptions for weight limits or dog breeds that accompany the right bed.
Even with their suggestions, it is still a good idea to look at the reviews for other customer feedback.
Most reviewers will also place their dogs in the bed for size reference.
Does Your Dog Need Any Special Support
As your dog gets older or experiences special needs, providing them the maximum amount of comfort and support possible is key.
Memory and orthopedic foam seem like the best options for the base.
Bolsters or a round-shaped bed is also an added plus as it caters to their neck.
What Washing Method Works Best for You
Last but certainly not least, how washable is the bed?
Dog beds are something that needs regular maintenance.
Hair, dirt, drool and a whole series of substances all tend to hang out in the bed.
Our dog friends are unflappable and unpredictable. Accidents are never out of the picture.
If worse comes to worst, having a removable cover is our thought for having the best option.
Placing the whole bed in the washer might be too much for your appliances.
Make sure to look over the best way to wash and dry the cover and/or bed.
Even though your pooch can’t wait to get back to bed, safeguarding the longevity and cleanliness of your bed is what you pay for.

Honorable Mentions
Here’s a brief look at the 8 options that didn’t make our list.
1. Barkbox Platform Dog Bed – Considered for Best Comfort
While Barkbox is a newer company, its products are premium-grade.
The reason why this bed missed the mark compared to the Magic Dog Orthopedic Foam Dog Bed, is that it is not as large or thick as advertised.
We also prefer to have beds that are waterproof over water-resistant as you know that anything can happen with our dogs.
2. Friends Forever Bed Lounge – Considered for Best Overall
If you’re willing to pay a pretty penny for your pup, this might be your speed.
This bed’s filling is made of the same memory foam used for baby mattresses. Why not get the best for your furry child?
The reason why the Furhaven Dog Bed was the better choice was that the zipper is a little flawed and it is also only water-resistant.
3. Majestic Pet Bagel Dog Bed – Considered for Comfort and Support
Majestic Pet’s take on a baked-rather-than-fried circular bed is not without merit.
The bed is comfy, cozy, waterproof and its shape provides great neck support. One downside is that it is a bit overstuffed towards the middle.
While it doesn’t sound like a bad thing, the lopsidedness could make for a pup or two rolling out. Additionally, it is a little expensive for the price points we’re aiming towards.
4. Molly Mutt Dog Bed Cover – Considered for Budget and Larger Dogs
This Molly Mutt has a sustainable and unique idea behind it. It has a mesh bag that you stuff your old clothes and pillows with.
The duvet cover conceals the bag and provides your pooch with a familiar smell.
By no means is it a bad bed but it is a little less durable than what we have considered.
A chain is no stronger than its weakest link and the zipper is a little bit too fragile for our liking.
5. Long Rich Bolster Pet Bed – Considered for Budget and Smaller Dogs
This bed has a neat feature: it’s reversible. One side (knitted corduroy) is designed for the colder months and the other (faux suede) is designed for warmer months.
Both don’t skimp on comfort. The bed is not designed for chewers or diggers and thus is not that durable.
6. Dogbed4less Memory Foam Dog Bed – Considered for Larger Dogs
This bed displays a rather unique fabric that debuts on this list which is denim.
The memory foam is covered with three different layers to support your dog to its best ability.
While the denim might be a nice sight, it is not the most durable. The included suede cover might be the better option.
7. BarksBar Snuggly Sleeper – Considered for Support
The extra padding on this bed is tailor-made for your older or arthritic dogs. In addition, while it is a larger bed, the cover is very easily washable.
Unfortunately, the bed is only available in a gray color that–like its bolsters– becomes duller over time. This is why we felt the JOYELF Memory Foam Bed was a better option.
8. Pet Craft Supply Soho Round Dog Bed – Considered for Smaller Dogs
This souffle-shaped bed can be your designated dog or cat bed (we don’t discriminate around here). The round design guarantees a cozy snooze.
Our dogs took an instant liking to this one but it doesn’t hold up in terms of durability, which leads to shedding.
These flaws made us decide that the Bedsure Calming Dog Bed was a better option.
