What We Liked

  • Affordable price point
  • 3-layer system that ensures a clean area around the potty
  • Easy clean-up
  • Available in 2 sizes

What We Didn’t Like

  • Needs frequent cleaning

One of the things we noticed first about this potty is the affordable price point.

Even though it won’t break the bank, please be sure that it won’t disappoint you either.

This potty’s maintenance, style, and size make it a great value.

Maintenance & Style

The style of this potty is simple; it is like a mat of synthetic grass. Sometimes, pet gear tends to be very big.

This potty, however, is a flat mat that can be easily tucked away out of sight and is good for the pup to use.

Cleaning this potty is a breeze. It is built in a 3-layer system that allows the liquid to empty into a collection tray.

When it’s time to clean, just empty the collection tray and rinse the three layers with soapy water.

Sizing

These potties come in handy for small to medium-sized breeds. It is big enough to accommodate your pet and small enough to move from room to room.

We found that this mat was also a great tool for puppy potty training, which can be tricky at times.

Because of its lightweight and realistic-looking grass, the pups were able to learn to relieve themselves quicker in a designated spot.

What We Liked

  • Perforated grate
  • Long-lasting pads
  • Ideal for small dogs

What We Didn’t Like

  • Plastic isn’t ideal for concealing the smell

If you have a puppy in your home, this potty is the right choice for you. It is made with a snap grid system.

The perforated grate snaps into place on top of the training pads and allows all liquid to flow onto the pads.

Messes are minimal with this potty and your pup’s feet and the floor will remain dry.

Maintenance & Style

We are happy to report from our tests that the padding lasts a long time as well as the hard plastic build of the grate.

The grate is also chew-proof so if your puppy likes to chew at stuff, this potty will be safe against those teeth!

If you are in the middle of house training your dog, we recommend you check out these tips from PetMD.

3. Best for the Environment: Fresh Patch Disposable Dog Potty

Style 5/5

Quality 5/5

Sizes: 8″ to 35″ (Back Length) | Material Type: Buckle | Brand: Hurtta | Style: | Features: Waterproof | Dogs: Small to Large Breeds

What We Liked

  • Environmentally friendly
  • Made with real grass
  • Reminds dog of natural outside environment
  • Easy cleaning

What We Didn’t Like

  • Price point is bit high for a disposable potty

This indoor potty is made of 100% natural grass and comes in a cardboard box.

It is light and easy to keep in any room for easy access.

It absorbs everything, and we found that this particular mat actually keeps bad odor away.

Maintenance & Style

What our testers really liked is how easy it is to clean up. All you do is throw out the entire mat and lay down a fresh new one.

Because it is made from real grass, we didn’t feel like we were harming the environment by disposing of a biodegradable mat of grass.

One thing to take note of when considering purchasing this potty is that you have to completely replace it with a new one after every disposal.

The cost for that will add up over time and won’t necessarily be the cheapest option out there.

Sizing

This indoor potty is fairly versatile and accommodates small, medium, and large dogs.

It comes in 4 different sizes and accommodates pets that are over 30 pounds. We were thoroughly impressed with this size selection.

Its compact design also allows it to be stored in almost any space. This versatility is very important, especially for those who live in small apartments.

4. Best for Maintenance: DoggieLawn Real Grass Dog Potty

Product Ratings

Affordability 4.8/5
Maintenance5/5
Style 5/5
Sizing 5/5
Quality 5/5

Dimensions: 20 x 24 x 2.75 inches | Material Type: Grass | Brand: DoggieLawn | Style: Mat | Features: Eco Friendly | Dogs: Small to Medium Breeds

What We Liked

  • Neutralizes odors naturally
  • Biodegradable and recyclable

What We Didn’t Like

  • Some users reported bug issues

A common gripe that some customers have about this potty is the price.

This potty has to be replaced every two weeks so it will end up being a tad expensive over time.

While we love this potty, it may be out of budget for many people.

Maintenance & Style

Like the previous grass mat we reviewed, this one is also disposable.

Every couple of weeks, it needs to be discarded and replaced with a fresh pad.

This does make for easy, breezy cleaning, and we enjoyed this convenience.

This doggie potty is all-natural, neutralizes odors, and is very absorbent. We appreciated not dealing with a foul smell in our home while we tested this mat.

Sizing

This potty is just the right size to accommodate puppies and small to medium-sized dogs.

It isn’t too large, making it easier to keep in the home for easy access for your pup.

This potty is flat on the floor, and because of that, we found that it suits older and arthritic dogs very well.

If your dog falls under one of these categories, we recommend you check it out.

Something that we liked about the size of this mat is how easy it is to move around. It can fit well in any room and is suited for taking on road trips, in an RV, boat, or hotel.

What We Didn’t Like

  • Design maybe restrictive for some dogs

We find that the style of this potty is simple and very easy to use. It is made of hard, durable plastic in tray form.

You just set it out, fill it with some dog litter, and train your dog to use it.

Maintenance & Style

It comes in a variety of colors to choose from to suit your color scheme, which we think is a great advantage for inside the home.

The manufacturer claimed that the tray doesn’t buckle under heavyweight, and we tested that claim.

We were pleased to see that their claim was correct. This potty is indeed well made.

Sizing

This potty tray comes in 3 sizes but is still capable of supporting dogs up to 20 lbs.

If you have a small dog or puppy, this will work out well for your household.

Another thing we noted during our tests is how light the overall potty is, and we found it easy to move around.

The front opening of the tray is 3” inches from the ground, which may be restrictive for older dogs and small pups.

What We Didn’t Like

This potty is styled in a mat made of synthetic yarn to mimic the look and feel of grass.

We find that this style is the best to help the dogs feel comfortable enough to relieve themselves without going outside.

Maintenance & Style

Because of its durable build, this indoor potty will stand the test of time and weather. It is fireproof and UV protected.

Keeping it outside during the warmer months is an option if you see fit.

Cleaning this mat is very simple.

We found that rinsing with soap and water is just what it needs to keep odors away and provide the dog with a clean potty.

When you take your dog on a walk to let them relieve themselves, you’ll need bags to clean up.

Check out our article on The Best Biodegradable Poop Bags.

Sizing

As we said previously, this dog potty is perfect for large dogs.

If you have a husky or golden retriever, they will be perfectly content using this mat.

It isn’t so big that it takes up a large portion of the floor but big enough to provide ample space for large dogs.

If you need to store it for a bit, you can roll it up like a yoga mat, and it won’t take up much room.

Because it’s lightweight (2 lbs), it’s easy to move around from place to place without straining yourself.

The Winner

We chose the Petmaker Training Mat for our winner. It checks out in all the boxes – durably built, easy to clean, and it has a great 3-layer padding system.

It is very absorbent, keeps the floors dry, and best of all, no mess. We think it’s the perfect indoor potty.

How to Choose the Best Indoor Potty

It can be overwhelming to know what to look for in an indoor potty, so we narrowed down some of the criteria on which we tested these products.

This is a good guideline to follow when deciding what to pick for your dog.

Sizing

When choosing a potty, the first thing to look out for is the size. You want to choose something that isn’t too small in dimensions for the dog.

If it’s small, the likelihood of a mess increases.

Also, in terms of size, look out for how much the potty will weigh. This is important to note if you want it to be portable.

Obviously, it is much easier to move or clean something light to hold.

Style

Below is a list of possible style options that potties come in:

  • Floor pads
  • Trays – require padding or litter inside to catch all the liquid
  • Multi-layer system – liquid drains through onto a pad without causing wet paws and floors.

Materials

As you can see throughout our review, most potties come made of hard plastic, synthetic grass, or grass.

The materials you choose depend on your budget and what is important to you.

Real grass mats are the easiest to have because of how easy it is to dispose of them and lay down a new one.

This is environmentally friendly but can be expensive over time.

Plastic potties are a great option because you don’t need to rebuy anything but it requires more effort to clean and can be smelly.

We recommend you choose the kind of potty that suits your dog, preferences, and lifestyle.

Cost of Consumables

Whether you’re looking at a grass pad that needs replacing or padding you need to buy on an ongoing basis, make sure you factor these expenses into your budgeting.

The Dog’s Habits

We also recommend considering your dog’s bladder health and bathroom habits.

If they tend to go frequently or are incontinent, an indoor potty is essential.

In that case, you would need something that absorbs large amounts of liquid like the Starroad Artificial Dog Turf

In general, we recommend you speak to a veterinarian if you notice changes in bathroom patterns.

Honorable Mentions

Here is a brief overview of the potties that we tested that didn’t make it to our top 6 picks.

1. PetSafe Pet Loo Indoor And Outdoor Dog Potty – Considered for Best in Synthetic Products

This potty is a bit on the expensive side, retailing at $89. We believe it is made with high-quality synthetic materials that mimic real grass.

It is durable and will last a long time.

Though this mat is great, when it comes down to it, we are more inclined to recommend and use the best overall mat we reviewed earlier, Petmaker Training Mat.

It is more affordable, easy to clean, and will last just as long as this one.

2. Amazon Basics Potty Training Pads – Considered Best for Affordable

These training pads from Amazon Basics are affordable, disposable, and leakproof.

They have a variety of sizes to choose from and come in pack sizes that range from 25 to 150 pads.

These pads are great for anyone who is strapped for time, but as lovers of animals and the environment, we gravitate more towards our eco-friendly options such as Fresh Patch Disposable Dog Potty.

This potty is disposable like the Amazon Basics pads, but it is biodegradable and is much better for the environment.

3. Hompet Dog Grass Pad – Considered Best for Maintenance

This synthetic grass pad is a great accident-proof, easy-to-clean potty.

The urine collection tray is built to guard against odors and is simple to maintain.

It is durable and will stand the test of time and weather.

Though we were impressed with the technology and build of this pad, we were thrown off by the high price.

We preferred the DoggieLawn Real Grass Dog Potty, which is half the price, easy to clean, and is eco-friendly and biodegradable when discarded.

4. HQ4us Dog Grass Pad – Considered Best for Large Dogs

This pad is a bit on the pricey side but it comes with a large tray and two pads that can be changed out daily if needed.

It is suitable for big dogs, and with its advanced absorbent technology, it eliminates odors and provides a mess-free space.

Though the technology used to build this mat is great and it does promise long-lasting and effective use, we still gravitate towards the Starroad Artificial Dog Turf.

It is bigger, weather-proof, and a much more affordable option.

5. HIPIPET Puppy Dog Potty Tray – Considered Best for Small Dogs

This dog potty tray comes with a snap grid that goes on top of the tray that holds the pad.

It helps maintain an accident-free floor and guards against the dog’s chewing tendencies.

If you have a young puppy, this would be a good option for you.

After reviewing and testing this tray, we prefer the PuppyGoHere Dog Litter Pan.

We found that it’s much easier to clean and is just as suitable for small dogs and puppies.

It also costs half of the HIPIPET, which is always a selling point for us.
