We Tested the 6 Best Dog Coats for Large Dogs in 2022!

Some owners find it challenging to get their dogs to exercise in the winter months, due to the cold and wet conditions creating an environment too rugged for their bodies to handle.

This is why many pet parents turn to dog coats to save the day. Dog coats can protect your dog from the elements and keep them comfortable and visible, day and night.

For this testing, we focused on coats that protect dogs from cold temperatures.

If you want to protect your dog from overheating, check out our reviews of The Best Dog Cooling Vests!

The most widely available dog coats we found only come in sizes for small to medium dogs, so for our testing, we focused on the best coats that come in sizes to meet the needs of larger breeds.

How We Chose the Best Dog Coats for Large Dogs

Dog wearing a coat
Dog coats protect your dog from cold weather and rain.

We originally narrowed our search by eliminating any coats that did not include a size for dogs whose back length is over 25 inches.

Once we had created a collection of these larger coats, we zeroed in on brands that we knew we could trust.

We looked at products from Hurtta, a company with years of experience producing outdoor products for dogs. This company is known for its durable, long-lasting products.

We also looked at WeatherBeeta, a well-respected company known for its weatherproof products for horses and has successfully transitioned into the dog products industry.

Finally, we turned to major distributors like Amazon and Chewy to shop the most popular and well-reviewed products.

We then ordered our favorites and put them to the test. Below you will find the collection of our top 6 coats for large dogs.

What We Didn’t Like

  • Confusing sizing chart

  • Somewhat bulky

Material and Sizing

This coat came with all the bells and whistles while still being offered at a price that we felt was competitive with the rest of the market.

This coat has the most flexible sizing that we found and fits even our biggest dogs comfortably. We did find the size chart to be a bit confusing.

In terms of material, our dogs loved the double layer design of this coat, with its warm fleece lining covered by a strong denier outer layer.

The coat kept our dogs warm and dry while still feeling breathable and flexible.

Features

We liked this coat’s key features: its ease of use and adjustment. With its Velcro strap design, there was some flexibility in size for each coat we purchased.

We also felt that this coat was easy to put on, which helped with our squirmy dogs.

Our dogs who truly suffer from the wind, cold, and rain were thankful for how much coverage this coat offered.

It includes a unique neck cover that gave our dogs that little extra bit of protection.

What We Liked

  • Flexible sizing
  • Leash accessible for convenience and safety

What We Didn’t Like

  • Outer material lacked durability
  • Velcro tended to come unstuck
  • Runs small, so take that into consideration when ordering

Material and Sizing

This winter coat offered protection from the elements at a budget-friendly price.

We loved how many sizes this coat came in, although we found they ran a bit smaller than the size chart.

This dog jacket has an inner layer of fleece and an outer layer of polyester, designed for both wet and cold environments.

Although it was not the thickest, we felt it could still keep our pups warm without being too thick and hefty.

Features

This coat’s velcro design and elastic seams made it a breeze for us to get it on and off our squirmy dogs.

We also liked the bonus that this coat has a convenient slit in the back for easy leash access.

If you are walking with a dog that pulls on the leash, check out our list of the Best Dog Collars for Pulling.

With the convenient reflective strip across the back, we felt safe taking our pups out in the dark with this coat.

It also has a convenient elastic band that wraps around the tail to prevent the coat from pulling up. Some of our dogs hated the elastic loop, and others didn’t mind.

Our main complaint about this product would be its lack of durability, but at this competitive price point, we felt it was a fair evaluation.

  • Reversible so the printed fleece blanket side can be worn on the outside

What We Didn’t Like

  • Fits looser than others we tested, so it flaps around in the wind
  • Confusing size chart
  • No slit for harnesses, but it sits below the collar

Material and Sizing

This reversible blanket coat kept our big dogs cozy on cold winter days.

Not only did our dogs love the comfort of this inner blanket design, we felt that this coat was quite fashionable and loved that we could reverse it to give our dogs some wardrobe versatility.

This dog coat accommodated a wide range of sizes, all the way up to our pups with a 30-inch back size.

We felt that the size chart was slightly misleading and confusing to understand, so take your time when ordering.

We will say that this coat was not the most form-fitting of the coats we worked with, so while the blanket interior did offer some extra warmth, the design allowed some wind to enter.

Features

Like many of our other candidates, this coat uses Velcro, making it easy for us to put on our dogs and adjust for size.

It also has reflective stripes to help us keep track of our dogs in the dark, and many of our testers also noted that this was great for keeping track of dogs in the snow.

For our fashionista pet owners, we loved that this coat came in 8 different colors, each with a unique embossed paw print on the pack to set it apart from other coats.

Furthermore, this coat is machine washable to keep it looking nice.

What We Didn’t Like

  • Less affordable than other coats we tried
  • Wasn’t as comfortable for long-haired dogs

Material and Sizing

This Hurtta coat is a warrior of dog coats and stood up to our most rambunctious dogs while keeping them safe in tough weather conditions.

This coat is waterproof yet is designed to be breathable.

We did not have problems with bulkiness in this coat like we did with others on our list, yet it was one of the most durable coats we tested.

This coat could accommodate up to a 35 inch back size for our truly giant dogs, making it stand out in the sizing department.

We did want to mention that this coat works best for short-haired dogs.

Features

Hurtta seemed to think of everything when designing this coat, and we think they did a stellar job designing for both comfort and safety.

For one, this coat was designed with a flexible buckle that firmly kept the coat in place and allowed us to adjust the size.

Additionally, the flexible elastic around the neck and legs allowed comfort and stability for dogs of all sizes.

Furthermore, this coat was designed with 3M reflectors so our dogs could be seen in the dark and the snow.

It also included a convenient leash slit for our furry friends who want a walk in the cold.

What We Didn’t Like

  • Not the warmest of coats, so it isn’t for frigid weather
  • Not the highest quality material
  • Runs small

Material and Sizing

This lightweight, flexible jacket was suitable for our dogs who need an extra layer for some outdoor fun, but it could also accommodate pups who get a little chilly even inside the house.

Our dogs found this coat very comfortable, with its fleece and cotton inner layer. In addition, the outer terylene and polyester layer kept them warm and dry.

Although this coat wasn’t the warmest of the bunch, it kept our dogs dry, and we liked the flexibility of being able to keep this on our pets inside without them overheating.

In terms of sizing, this coat was able to accommodate dogs with up to a 29-inch back length, with a wide range of sizes for all the smaller dogs as well.

This durable dog coat can handle the elements. Its outer layer is made of a sturdy ripstop and 1200 denier nylon material built to last.

We can personally vouch for the fact that this coat could withstand our doggies’ most blustery adventures.

The inner layer of this coat is lined with a comfortable fleece, which made our dogs love to wear this coat.

Although this is not the warmest coat on our list, we do feel it could brave a chilly, wet day.

This coat can accommodate dogs with a back size up to 29 inches.

We felt that this coat ran a little small, though, and would encourage ordering the size up when in between sizes.

Features

We loved the adjustable buckle that allowed this coat to accommodate growing dogs.

Additionally, this dog had a durable, zippered slit that allowed for collar accessibility and leash use.

Our favorite feature of this coat was its unique LED light that greatly increased visibility.

How to Choose the Best Dog Coat for a Large Dog

When beginning your hunt for a dog coat for your sizable pup, it can be overwhelming to know what features to look for.

Below, we have created a collection of criteria to help you refine your search.

Sizing

We focused on coats that could accommodate larger breeds for our testing, as many dog coats don’t run very large.

When choosing which size coat would best fit your pup, most coats are advertised with a size chart.

Be careful to pay attention to what the chart is measuring.

Most dog coats will ask you to measure your dog from the base of the neck to the tail, but some guides include chest width and height from head to toe.

Material

Most coats are made with an inner material of fleece or cotton that provides both comfort and warmth.

We look for durability and comfort when evaluating the inner material of a coat.

The outer layers of coats are made of a wide assortment of materials, but they usually offer some level of windproofing and waterproofing.

We find it helpful to think about what kind of weather our dogs will be encountering (wind, rain, snow, or cold) when making a call on the dog coat that best fits their needs.

Features

There are a host of creative features that dog coats offer that are worth considering when choosing.

Many coats offer some level of reflectability, whether through the color of the coat, attached lights, or added reflective strips.

Owners who know they will be taking their dogs in the snow or dark should consider these safety features.

Additionally, each coat is designed with a different way to get it on the dog.

Some coats come with Velcro straps or closures, others with a buckle, while still others use elastic bands. Each design offers a different level of adjustability and ease of use.

We especially loved the coats that had some access for a harness or collar so that we could leash up without interference from the coat.

We felt that considering these factors was especially important for owners with a growing pup or a best friend who is particularly squirmy when having their coat put on.
