How We Chose the Best Harnesses for your Dog

Dog with a harness running with owner
Harnesses give you control of your dog without the pulling and choking of walking on a collar.

For this review, we searched through the top pet brands known for their quality, like Rabbitgoo and RUFFWEAR, to find you the best options for your outdoor adventures.

We graded the harnesses on their price point and how comfortable they are for your dog to wear for extended periods of time.

Additional factors we included in our ranking are how much control they provide you over your dog’s movements, sizes available, adjustability, and how robust the material is when your dog inevitably uses it as a chew toy.

We scoured the internet for the best products and reviewed ratings and reviews from hundreds of dog owners on online shopping sites like Amazon, Walmart, REI, and Chewy to decide which harnesses we wanted to try out.

From the many options, we narrowed it down to the top 23 best harnesses that we wanted to test. Our favorite 8 are below with 10 honorable mentions to follow.

1. Best Overall: Rabbitgoo Dog Harness, No-Pull Pet Harness

Rabbitgoo Dog Harness, No-Pull Pet Harness

Product Ratings

Affordability 5/5
Comfort 5/5
Control 5/5
Sizing 4/5
Durability4/5

Lifestage: Puppy to adult | Harness Type: No Pull, Front-Clip, Back-Clip | Brand: Rabbitgoo | Material: Polyester, Nylon | Features: Waterproof | Dogs: Small to Large Breeds

What We Liked

  • Versatile and affordable option for most dog owners
  • Front leash attachment redirects motion to discourage pulling
  • Additional rear leash attachment is well-suited for running and walks with well-behaved dogs
  • Durable material can withstand being chewed on
  • Handle on top for holding dog close or picking up

What We Didn’t Like

  • We found the harness was more adjustable on larger breeds and didn’t work as well for smaller dogs

You really can’t go wrong with the Rabbitgoo No-Pull Pet Harness. The metallic D-rings provide a secure and adjustable attachment for your dog – one on the back for well-behaved dogs on walks or runs, and one “no-pull” attachment on the front for your energetic dog that goes chasing after squirrels and the neighbor’s cat.

We found the no-pull attachment especially appealing, as it redirects your dog’s own energy to the side – causing them to turn to face you every time they jerk forward. This presents no danger to your dog’s health but is a strong enough correction that it will eventually train your dog not to pull on the leash.

The hassle-free, overhead harness is comfortable to slip on and adjust. The two neck and chest straps make a perfect fit, while the buckles let you adjust the strap without choking hazards. The Oxford nylon strap with padded chest attachment offers an itch-free, comfortable harness that your dog will love to wear.

Additionally, the breathable material lets your dog stay cool during outdoor activities, and the straps feature reflective elements for improved visibility during the night.

While this harness has many sizing options, and each size features multiple adjustment points to customize the fit, we generally found that it was easier to adjust the harness on larger dogs.

So, if you’re purchasing this harness for a smaller breed, pay particular attention to the manufacturer’s sizing chart to ensure that you have the most secure and comfortable fit for your smaller pet.

2. Best Value: PetSafe Easy Walk Dog Harness

PetSafe Easy Walk Dog Harness

Product Ratings

Affordability 5/5
Comfort 3/5
Control5/5
Sizing 4/5
Durability4/5

Lifestage: Puppy to adult | Harness Type: No Pull, Front-Clip | Brand: Petsafe | Material: Nylon | Features: Waterproof | Dogs: Small to Large Breeds

What We Liked

  • Front-clip design discourages pulling
  • Quick-snap harness design for easy use
  • 1-year chew-damage warranty offers an extremely affordable replacement option if your dog chews through the material

What We Didn’t Like

  • Can chafe and cause irritation if used in wet weather

PetSafe is a highly reputable name in the dog equipment market, and a favorite for us at BarkVA, and this harness shows why they have so many fans worldwide. It has a simple design that is easy to take on and off and comes highly recommended by veterinarians and dog trainers alike.

What really stands out about this harness is the number of options it offers to pet owners: when it comes to sizing, you’re spoiled for choice. It comes in petite through extra-large, and each comes in eight different colors to fit your taste. Each harness is highly adjustable, so you have plenty of latitude to ensure a snug fit.

This nifty harness also features a front-clip design, which allows you to discourage light and moderate pulling – ideal if your dog tends to get excitable on the leash.

The material is simple and durable, and the webbing is waterproofed to prevent stretching and warping. However, we found the stiffer material occasionally caused some chafing if worn in wet weather, so keep a close eye on the fit and your dog’s comfort level in the rain.

We also really appreciated the one-year chew-damage warranty, so if your dog chews and damages it during the first year after purchase, you’ll qualify for a no-quibbles replacement!

3. Best for Small Breeds: Petsafe 3-in-1 Harness

Petsafe 3-In-1 Harness

Product Ratings

Affordability 3/5
Comfort 4/5
Control5/5
Sizing 4/5
Durability4/5

Lifestage: Puppy to adult | Harness Type: No Pull, Front-Clip, Rear Clip, Seat Belt Clip | Brand: Petsafe | Material: Nylon | Features: Reflective, Padded, Quick Release, Car Safety | Dogs: Small to medium breeds

What We Liked

  • 5 adjustment points allow for a highly customizable fit
  • Dual-style leash clip adjusts for running and walking
  • Seat belt attachment makes harness suitable for car rides
  • Front clip helps discourage light pulling

What We Didn’t Like

  • Front section of the harness tends to loosen slightly with use
  • We thought the price point could have been more competitive

The second PetSafe on our list, the 3-in-1 is the perfect combo of design aesthetics and user-friendly features. Its no-pull construction reduces or stops sudden tugs due to the vertical martingale and front D-ring clip.

Although the harness has a front clip, it doesn’t pressure the throat, preventing choking, coughing, or gagging. Five adjustment points let you get a custom fit for your dog. We love that placement tags ensure we place the easy strap correctly, giving us added convenience.

The best part is the dual back-clip setting; this makes the harness a great option if you like to go on runs with your pup. The straps are nylon for comfort and embedded with reflective materials to increase dim light visibility.

You can also attach a 2-point control leash (at an additional cost) for improved control. The belt is padded at all the right points to ensure it doesn’t put too much pressure on or chafe your furry friend’s skin. It also has a seatbelt handle, making this harness a great option for car rides.

Our only complaints are that the harness’s front portion tends to stretch and loosen a bit with use, and it is one of the more expensive options on our list.

4. Best for Larger Breeds: BABYLTRL Big Dog Harness

BABYLTRL Big Dog Harness

Product Ratings

Affordability 4/5
Comfort 5/5
Control5/5
Sizing 4/5
Durability2/5

Lifestage: Puppy to adult | Harness Type: Rear-Clip, Front-Clip, Handle | Brand: BABLYTRL | Material: Nylon | Features: Reflective, Padded, Quick Release | Dogs: Medium to Large Breeds

What We Liked

  • Quick-release buckles and locking mechanism
  • Dual-style leash clip adjusts for running and walking
  • Handle on back allows you to hold your dog close
  • Padding prevents choking if your dog pulls on the leash
  • We loved the affordable price point
  • Highly reflective

What We Didn’t Like

  • Some issues with quality control and durability

The BABYLTRL is an ideal harness for big dogs such as golden retrievers, labradors, german shepherds, and pit bulls, and it boasts an incredibly competitive price point.

The sturdy two metal D-rings at the front and back let you adjust the leash attachment to best suit your needs and dog’s behavior. The front leash limits pulling for easy control, whereas the back clip helps keep your dog comfortable if running or hiking.

The simple design and quick-release buckles allow you to easily slide the harness on and off. Paired with the locking features, the harness is quite safe and secure for daily walking, hiking, training, and outdoor adventures.

The mesh lining is highly breathable, and the padded front plate helps prevent injury if your dog pulls suddenly. Additionally, the reflective straps are incredibly bright, so your dog will be visible in dim conditions.

However, some reviewers noted inconsistencies in the quality control of the product and reported that the connecting straps can wear through very quickly. This harness held up great for us, but as with all dog harnesses, frequently inspect the webbing for signs of fraying, particularly if your dog is energetic on the leash.

5. Best for Adventuring: Ruffwear Front Range Dog Harness

Ruffwear Front Range Dog Harness

Product Ratings

Affordability 3/5
Comfort 5/5
Control5/5
Sizing 3/5
Durability4/5

Lifestage: Puppy to adult | Harness Type: Pull-on Front-Clip, Rear Clip | Brand: Ruffwear | Material: Polyester | Features: Padded, Reflective | Dogs: Small to Medium Breeds

What We Liked

  • 4 points of adjustment ensure a snug fit
  • Foam padding is comfortable enough to wear all day
  • Reflective trim allows for easier night walks

What We Didn’t Like

  • Metal ring can wear through the webbing
  • Not many sizing options for larger dogs
  • Lack of clips makes it slightly cumbersome to put on and pull off

The Ruffwear Front Range harness boasts four separate attachment points for your leash, allowing for a full range of motion.

While the pull-on design of the harness is a little more tedious than a quick-release design with clips, it improves the overall durability of the harness and prevents your dog from squirming its way out. However, the metal ring can pull through the webbing with extended use, so remember to check frequently for signs of wear.

The reinforced webbing on the front of this harness helps redistribute pressure if your dog starts straining or pulling, preventing injury to the trachea, and the padding keeps your furry friend comfortable even if you’re out for lengthier walks.

The reflective trim of this harness is very bright and helps your dog stand out against any landscape, day or night, so it’s perfect for tracking your pup down if you let them run off-leash on your adventures.

Additionally, the pocket on the harness is the perfect place for tucking in your pup’s ID tags – helping you track them down if they ever run off on their own.

6. Best for Night Walks: Noxgear Light Hound LED Dog Harness

Noxgear Light Hound LED Dog Harness

Product Ratings

Affordability 2/5
Comfort 5/5
Control4/5
Sizing 4/5
Durability4/5

Lifestage: Puppy to adult | Harness Type: Rear Clip | Brand: Noxgear | Material: Nylon | Features: LED, Reflective | Dogs: Extra-Small to Medium Breeds

What We Liked

  • Colored LED lights for high visibility
  • Foam padding is comfortable enough to wear all day
  • Reflective trim allows for easier night walks
  • Machine washable
  • Customizable light colors and flashing patterns to keep your dog visible to motorists

What We Didn’t Like

  • Significantly more expensive than comparable models
  • It’s difficult to replace the lighting mechanism once the recharge capacity of the battery pack is exhausted
  • The manufacturer sizing guide is vague, so finding the perfect fit for your dog can be tricky

If a standard reflective harness doesn’t offer you enough nighttime visibility, this light-up LED Noxgear harness will give you all the light you could ever want to ensure your fur baby is visible in the dark. It’s the priciest option in our lineup, but this harness delivers bang for the buck.

It features 8 high-intensity LED lights that you can customize, picking the perfect pattern and sequence of colors. The programmable flashing patterns allow you to opt for slow fades and multi-colored flashing effects – the perfect way to keep your dog visible to drivers on a dark road.

The rechargeable battery means you’ll have no ongoing running costs. You can expect up to 12 hours of use on a single charge, giving you all-day (or all-night) performance. It’s even machine washable!

There are four sizes to choose from, and the straps are adjustable for a snug fit. This harness is pretty easy to put on your dog, and it snaps securely into place. If you need your dog to stay visible at distances of up to half a mile, there’s simply no substitute for this harness from Noxgear.

7. Best for Special Needs Dogs: RUFFWEAR – Web Master, Multi-Use Support Dog Harness

RUFFWEAR – Web Master, Multi-Use Support Dog Harness

Product Ratings

Affordability 2/5
Comfort 5/5
Control5/5
Sizing 4/5
Durability4/5

Lifestage: Puppy to adult | Harness Type: No Pull, Front-Clip, Rear Clip, Lift Handle | Brand: Ruffwear | Material: Nylon | Features: Reflective, Padded, Quick Release, Supportive | Dogs: Small to Large Breeds

What We Liked

  • Supportive structure assists movement and is ideal for mobility-restricted dogs
  • Reflective elements in harness support visibility
  • Lift handle on back for holding dog close or assisting over terrain

What We Didn’t Like

  • The plastic structure in the harness can be uncomfortable for some dogs

This anatomically designed harness is the right choice for your canine friend. It is ideal for your adventure-loving dog to explore those dangerous terrains safely.

The harness is perfect for work, service, and amputee dogs. Designed to support maneuvering, the reinforced padded handles provide safety and comfort. It assists your dog in overcoming hurdles without any pain or discomfort.

Its five flexible adjustment points offer customized settings for smooth movement. The anodized, aluminum V-ring, two clip points, and a webbing loop provide easy control and sturdy support to your furry companion. The foam-padded straps offer extra comfort without hindering movement.

Trail tested, the harness is made from durable and long-lasting materials for years of use. Surrounded with reflective trims and a safety light loop (beacon light sold separately) for improved visibility in the dark.

8. Best for Headstrong Dogs: Icefang Tactical Dog Harness

Icefang Tactical Dog Harness

Product Ratings

Affordability 4/5
Comfort 5/5
Control5/5
Sizing 4/5
Durability4/5

Lifestage: Puppy to adult | Harness Type: No Pull, Front-Clip, Rear Clip, Seatbelt | Brand: Icefang | Material: Nylon and Polyester | Features: Reflective, Padded, Quick Release | Dogs: Small to Large Breeds

What We Liked

  • Quick-release buckles and locking mechanism
  • Dual-style leash clip adjusts for running and walking
  • No-pull, no-choke design
  • By far the most durable harness of all the ones we tested
  • Very reasonable price point

What We Didn’t Like

  • The stiff materials mean this isn’t the most comfortable harness in our lineup

If you have an active dog prone to pulling, a tactical harness is a great way to keep him in check without causing him undue discomfort. This is the second-largest model in a broad range, ideal for dogs with necks from 18 to 24 inches and chests measuring 28 to 35 inches.

Choose from a handful of muted colors and slip it on your dog with ease. The metal hardware has been load-tested to much higher loads than the competition. If you hook your dog’s leash up to the no-pull front clip, you’ll be able to easily redirect your dog when you need to take charge.

Hook-and-loop panels sewn in provide ample space for your dog’s ID information.

This harness doesn’t deliver the comfort levels of softer harnesses, but in terms of build quality, lifespan, and overall performance, this is a very strong contender for the best dog harness on the market.

The Winner

Our clear favorite was the Rabbitgoo No-Pull Dog Harness. It offers incredible versatility at a great price point, is adjustable enough for dogs of all sizes, and is durable to last for years. It’s a fantastic option for any dog owner.

How to Choose the Best Harness

Dog with a harness
Harnesses should fit snuggly while still being comfortable for your dog to wear.

Consider Your Dog’s Needs

Your dog’s energy levels and behaviors on their walks, the terrain, how big or small your dog is, and whether or not you’ll be going for long or short walks all fall under your dog’s needs. Consider these needs when looking for the best dog harness for your pet.

Read More: The Best Dog Collars for Pulling. Discourage unwanted behavior during walks with these tried and true collars!

How Well Behaved is Your Dog?

Is your dog a model citizen? Or does your dog chase after every squirrel, mailman, and cat they see? Be sure to consider how much control you need to maintain over your dog’s movements.

A big, strong, energetic dog with a tendency to pull on the leash needs multiple leash attachments, as well as additional padding and pressure distribution to prevent harming their throat when they jerk the leash around.

A small and well-behaved dog may need a harness with a carry strap so you can easily lift them over rocks and puddles while you’re out.

Material

Take comfort, reflectiveness (or lack thereof), breathability, durability, and cleanability into consideration when choosing a dog harness or vest. Does your dog pull on the leash? Do you need to lift and carry your dog over obstacles? Do you walk at night or in the rain? Do they dislike heavy vests or chew on soft foam padding?

For most dogs, we recommend sturdy nylon for the harness, with padding to prevent pinching and chafing, and if the harness covers more of your dog’s body like a vest, that vest material should have some mesh or other breathable material to keep your dog comfortable in warm weather.

Sizing Your Dog

Each product you look at will have a sizing guide and/or chart for you to reference when choosing a size for your dog. Always take your dog’s measurements before buying a harness to ensure the best fit.

Check out this vet-approved guide for more information: How to Measure Your Dog for a Harness.

Honorable Mentions

Here’s a brief look at the 10 options that didn’t make our list.

1. Copatchy Adjustable Dog Harness – Considered for Best Value

This funky dog harness comes in 5 different colors with a remarkably flexible design and a handy grab-handle on top. The harness comes with breathable sponge padding that discourages pulling. It also comes in at a budget-friendly price point.

However, there is only one leash attachment, limiting the control you have over your dog. So, if you have a dog that likes to pull, the PetSafe Easy Walk Dog Harness offers more security for just a few dollars more – and comes with a great replacement policy.

2. Kurgo Dog Harness – Considered for Larger Breeds

Though this harness was great for medium to large dogs, the fact that the front straps on the neck and chest aren’t adjustable eliminated it from consideration. While it has lots of great features, including a no-pull collar, a seat belt attachment, and quick-release buckles, it’s not adjustable enough to be right for every owner.

Overall, we found that the BABYLTRL Big Dog Harness was more adjustable and comfortable for larger breeds – and came at a more competitive price point, too.

3. Bolux Dog Harness – Considered for Larger Breeds

This harness is specifically designed for large and extra-large breeds, is incredibly durable, and comes at a great price point. If you have a big dog that loves to pull, this is a great option to help get them under control.

However, the harness can be tricky to put on, and many reviewers reported that it’s possible for the dog to wiggle out of the harness if they back up. We found the BABYLTRL Big Dog Harness to be more secure for all but the largest dog breeds.

4. PoyPet No-Pull Dog Harness – Considered for Smaller Breeds

This harness deserves the most honorable of mentions – it has multiple leash attachments, comes in multiple colors, and has snap buckles to make putting on and taking off a breeze, not to mention it has an extremely competitive price point.

However, sizing runs extremely small, the straps are finicky, and the top leash connection has a tendency to fray through – although the harness itself is quite sturdy.

We ultimately found that the assets of this spunky harness just couldn’t quite outweigh the drawbacks, and found the Petsafe 3-in-1 Harness to be a more reliable option across the board.

5. Voyager Step-In Dog Harness – Considered for Smaller Breeds

If the tactical harness above seems like overkill for your well-behaved dog, why not consider this soft harness from Voyager? The sizing skews toward smaller dogs, and it features lots of padding for a comfortable fit without sacrificing security.

The Petsafe 3-in-1 Harness was not quite as comfortable as the Voyager, but we chose it for our top picks because we noticed that the Voyager coloring tends not to match with the product photos, and the reflective strips didn’t work very well.

6. ThinkPet No-Pull Harness – Considered for Adventuring

The ThinkPet is a great sports harness with a choke-free design with a handy grip on the back. The flexible strap setting allows you to custom fit your dog’s harness while its durable material ensures long-term, daily use, and the highly optimized mesh vest provides incredible ventilation for added comfort and coolness.

As great as this harness is in terms of quality and pricing, we noticed many inconsistencies between items in sizing, and so we recommend the Ruffwear Front Range Dog Harness for a more reliable fit.

7. Puppia Soft Dog Harness – Considered for Adventuring

Puppia’s soft dog harness is one of the comfiest options at your disposal. If your dog behaves well when you’re out for walks and you are not so concerned about controlling pulling, this harness is a must. It is very breathable, making it a great choice for those in warm climates, and it’s highly adjustable.

This didn’t make the top 8, though, because it’s only suitable for well-behaved dogs, and it’s not the sturdiest option. If you need a harness that can take more of a beating and keep you in charge of your pup, the Ruffwear Front Range Dog Harness will give you more control.

8. BARKBAY No Pull Dog Harness – Considered for Adventuring

This no-pull dog harness features lightweight construction and provides instant comfort while giving you optimum control over your dog’s movements. The no-rip nylon construction with anti-chafe padding makes it comfortable enough for hiking on challenging terrains.

However, several reviewers noted that the harness tends to fray quickly, and so we recommend the Ruffwear Front Range Dog Harness for its better mileage and durability.

9. Voopet Service Dog Harness – Considered for Special-Needs Dogs

The no-pull choke-free harness is an ideal match for your canine friend. The traction pressure distributes evenly, which reduces the chances of sudden tugs. The all-weather, breathable mesh vest is cool to touch and ideal for keeping your dog comfortable on hot summer days.

However, the velcro strap attachments have a tendency to catch and pull on your dog’s fur, and the RUFFWEAR – WebMaster, Multi-Use Support Dog Harness offers better support for injured or amputee dogs.

10. Juxzh Truelove Dog Harness – Considered for Headstrong Dogs

Ideal for strong dogs, this adjustable harness is made of durable, scratch-resistant materials for lifelong use. The Oxford nylon, combined with Duraflex buckles, provides exceptional tensile strength and huge loading capacity.

This was a very competitive harness, but it ultimately lost out to the Icefang Tactical Dog Harness due to its very limited size range.
