How We Chose the Best Collars Compatible With Pet Stop

When considering an electric fence in general, safety is surely a number one concern.

Therefore, we made sure to only consider known and trusted brands.

We went to electric fence brand websites, as well as Amazon, and Chewy to get a closer look at fence systems, collars, transmitters, and batteries.

In doing so, we were able to learn what works best in a pet containment system.

We also looked into the compatibility these brands had with Pet Stop.

While there are many factors you should consider when looking for a collar, we mainly focused on effectiveness, quality, and safety.

Finally, we put them to the test to see where they shine and what their weaknesses are.

What We Didn’t Like

This collar from PetSafe is straight to the point and gets the job done. It’s durable yet comfortable, powerful yet safe.

The PetSafe In Ground Fence Collar is hands-down the best electric collar that works with Pet Stop!

So, why is that?

Effectiveness

PetSafe is quite a well known brand in the pet containment industry, bringing great results to many pet owners.

That’s why we were not surprised when this collar worked just as expected.

Turning the collar on and getting dogs accustomed to it was no issue.

Furthermore, when dogs reached the limit of the boundary or passed it, the collar performed well.

Thanks to the effectiveness of the collar, and proper training, dogs understood the boundary, and most stayed within it.

We did have a dog or two who had to test the limits right away, but the collar corrected the behavior and we didn’t have any more trouble.

These types of collars are not the same as a dog training collar! These collars only keep the dog inside the fence.

They don’t correct barking, and they don’t have a remote control for behavior training.

If you’re thinking about installing a new invisible fence or replacing your old one, don’t shop until you read our reviews on some of the best dog fence brands like PetSafe and SportDog!

Quality

Compared to many competing brands PetSafe offers electric fence collars at an affordable price and it offers safety for our dogs and a quality, reliable build.

The transmitter and receiver communicated well.

Plus, we loved how long the battery lasted, even after several months they were still going strong!

We noticed the indicator would say the battery was low, but the collar would continue to remain on and functional for quite some time.

This is actually a really nice feature because it gave us some time to order and get the replacement battery before it was dead, so our fence didn’t have any downtime.

While the batteries aren’t rechargable, we love that we don’t have to worry about the dogs being off the collars while they’re plugged in for charging.

The batteries take just a few seconds to swap out and they last for a really long time.

Safety

Finally, we found that safety had to be a top priority when choosing an electric dog fence collar.

After all, this is something your dog is going to wear often.

This collar definitely passed the test here. We never noticed any dogs who looked uncomfortable or had irritated skin or fur.

In fact, after wearing this collar for a few months, we didn’t notice any change in the dogs’ physical or mental state.

They were still happily playing together in the yard.

We believe this can be attributed to the 5 different correction levels this collar uses.

There’s an auditory warning-only mode, and 4 different levels of static correction.

This allows you to lower the level of correction for sensitive canines, or raise the level for hard-headed hounds!

Always be sure to use proper correction levels with your dog, and be sure that they meet the sizing requirements for the collar!

2. Best Rechargable Collar: PetSafe Rechargeable Collar

Product Ratings

Affordability4.5/5
Effectiveness5/5
Durability4/5
Safety4.5/5
Quality4.5/5

Collar Size: 6”- 26” | Recommended Weight: 5+lbs | Brand: PetSafe | Color: Black | Battery: Rechargeable

What We Liked

  • Safe and reliable correction
  • Low battery indicator
  • Responsive customer care
  • Long lasting rechargeable battery

What We Didn’t Like

  • Training tone is finicky
  • Downtime during battery recharging

Our runner-up for collars that work with Pet Stop is the PetSafe Rechargeable collar.

Here’s a look at our first hand experience with this collar, and what brought it to second place on the list!

Effectiveness

This is yet another reliable collar from PetSafe. In testing all features of the collar, from the audio, to static correction, to the battery, we did not encounter functionality issues.

Also, we loved how the battery not only functioned properly, but was also rechargeable.

We noticed the collar could go from weeks up to months without recharging depending on usage.

The only complaint is that there is downtime on the collar and fence during recharging.

It’s not a problem if we remembered to recharge the collars overnight, but when we forgot we had trouble the next day.

Quality

We were mostly pleased with the quality of this collar. Coupled with its effectiveness and price, we felt it was a standard choice.

We noticed the strap for the collar is nylon as opposed to others who use bulky plastic or other material that isn’t as durable, or comfortable for the dog.

We would like to mention that the collar isn’t indestructible.

We did have a determined dog who was able to remove the receiver from the collar through continued rough play, coupled with wear and tear.

If this is an issue for you, PetSafe, among other brands, offers replacement collar straps!

We just popped down to the pet store and bought a nylon collar the same width and punched holes in it to attach the receiver unit.

Safety

We were pleased with how well this collar performed in keeping dogs in the yard, and safe. Further, we appreciated how safely the collar did so.

There is an audio warning that simply corrects the dog without physical action.

Plus, there are different levels of correction, so you can find a level that gets your furry friend’s attention without harming them.

There is also a low battery indicator, which definitely came in handy.

It was useful to know when the battery needed recharging, and we didn’t have to worry about it randomly dying while in use.

If you’re wondering how pet fences work, they’re quite a genius invention.

As long as the collar receiver and radio transmitter are on the same frequency, they work to safely contain dogs (and cats!)

3. Best for Stubborn Dogs: PetSafe Stubborn Dog Collar

Best for Stubborn Dogs

Product Ratings

Affordability4.5/5
Effectiveness4.5/5
Durability4.5/5
Safety4.5/5
Quality4/5

Collar Size: 6”- 28” | Recommended Weight: 8+ lbs | Brand: PetSafe | Closure Type: Snap | Battery: Non-rechargeable

What We Liked

  • A vibration option for correction
  • Very durable collar and receiver
  • Works for really stubborn dogs
  • Dogs quickly get used to the collar

What We Didn’t Like

  • Not the best for very large dogs
  • Inconsistent functionality in some units

If you have a veteran escape artist who just doesn’t seem to respond to typical static correction collars, this collar is for you!

Take a look at our in depth review on the PetSafe Stubborn Dog Collar.

Effectiveness

This collar does exactly as advertised! It works properly to keep your dog contained, even the most headstrong canines.

We observed the functionality of this collar on many dogs of different ages and breeds from a middle age Shiba Inu to a young Pitbull, and the collar did well to correct the dogs.

It’s important to understand that all dogs learn differently, so what works for one dog may not work for another, even if they’re the same breed.

However, the stubborn dog collar works great for dogs who don’t respond to the regular collars.

We had dogs who were known to slip from their harness or leash, and break free from the yard in the past, who now with the collar, do not even tempt the boundary.

We appreciated the different correction levels this collar had. There was the usual auditory warning of course, as well as the static shock.

However, there was also a vibration option that we felt was very useful, especially for hearing impaired dogs.

Quality

For the most part this product is well worth it. The collar shows great durability and can handle most wear and tear.

The collar and receiver didn’t show any damage to integrity after a couple months.

However, we did have reports of quality control issues for a small number of units.

Some issues reported were that the collar would sometimes beep or emit a correction while still well within the boundary.

Safety

We know how important it is to keep your four legged friend in the yard.

Sometimes, no matter how hard you train, or what fencing system you buy, it seems nothing works.

At times, this is simply because the dog isn’t as sensitive to the static correction being emitted by the collar.

This collar, which is just a bit stronger than other collars, effectively gets your dog’s attention.

We always tested the collar ourselves to ensure that it functioned, but wasn’t harmful.

We never had issues where dogs were injured or harmed, and that is vital when looking for an invisible fence collar!

Every dog must be trained to use a wireless fence! You can’t simply plug it in and set the dog inside.

The best results always come from positive reinforcement boundary training inside the fenced area.

The Winner

In the end, we chose the PetSafe In Ground Fence Collar as the best overall option for a collar that works with Pet Stop.

PetSafe is reliable and works great, making it an easy choice for the number one pick!

How to Choose the Best Invisible Fence Collar

It can be tough to choose the right receiver collar for your dog.

We found collars that work well for various dogs and yards, but you may have a different collar in mind for your dog.

If that’s the case, here are a few things to keep in mind while you shop around.

Read More: Do Perimeter Collars Work With Invisible Fence? See which systems work together!

Consider Your Dog’s Size and Breed

Your dog has to wear the collar often, so consider how the collar will fit.

Even if it looks fine to you, think of how your dog may feel with a collar that is too heavy for them.

Also don’t buy a collar that fits too snug, and feels tight.

Collars can injure dogs in the sensitive trachea area, so buying a properly fitting dog collar is vital for their health.

You also don’t want to use receiver collars on dogs who are too small or young to handle the physical stimulation.

Don’t attempt to use one on a dog younger than 12 weeks old.

Also, plan to spend a few weeks boundary training your dog to use the fence and collar, no matter what breed you have.

Features

Take a look at the features the collar has to offer and compare them to the needs of you and your dog.

Check whether the collar has different correction levels, that it’s waterproof, and has the battery you want.

Make sure you take a look at safety features as well.

We always choose collars that allow for correction-free entry so dogs are never afraid to return home if they escape the yard.

Research

Get to know the product really well before you click “buy.”

Check out the company, learn what to expect from the collar, and how to troubleshoot it if needed.

However, don‘t just take the company’s word for it, check out reviews on websites Amazon or Chewy, or even ask people you know who own the product.

Be sure that this product works well for the price, keeps your dog safe, and won’t end up costing an arm and a leg with replacement and repairs.

Doing a bit of detective work before you make a purchase is definitely worth it.

How to Check for Collar Compatibility

Most brands make their products interchangeable, meaning you can use a collar from one PetSafe fencing system, and use it with the transmitter of another PetSafe system.

The same can be said for Pet Stop and Invisible Fence.

These same brands have also shown compatibility with one another, as well as other brands like Dog Watch and Dog Guard.

While a simple Google search may be able to tell you about the compatibility for your collar, it’s not always that easy.

One way to check compatibility is to look at the product listing as it is often listed somewhere on the page.

If that doesn’t work, while it can sometimes take a bit longer, reaching out to the manufacturer directly will undoubtedly yield answers you know you can trust.

If you’re wondering if a product will be compatible with your Pet Stop system there are many authorized dealers across the nation who can answer your questions.

If you decide to make a purchase they can even help you with set up, and training your dog!

How Does Pet Stop Fencing Work?

Pet Stop works just as any other pet fence would.

A transmitter emits a boundary that contains your pet, if they approach and ultimately cross this boundary, the receiver emits a warning or physical correction.

One of the many things that sets Pet Stop fence systems apart is they’re method of communication.

Most pet fence brands use FM radio signals and occasionally AM, which work just fine usually.

Pet Stop on the other hand uses Digital Modulation (DM) which has proven to be a more secure and reliable method.

This is a variant of AM signal, and it is actually used by air traffic controllers.

Pet Stop uses AM signals, and digital techniques to get the best uninterrupted signal possible!

Why Choose Pet Stop Fencing?

In the late 80’s two men, Bob Slattery and Bob Wolfe, noticed there was potential to improve on pet containment systems that were currently offered.

By the early 90’s these men founded Pet Stop, which offered a more technically advanced and affordable pet containment system.

Here are some of the features Pet Stop introduced to the industry:

  • Rubberized Comfort Contacts – Helps prevent pressure necrosis (skin infection inflicted by collar prongs)
  • Flash Alert – Industry’s first low battery light
  • Zapp Alert – Warning system (warn of lightning or a broken wire)
  • Tri-Scan – 3 antennae collar designed to minimize blindspots

Aside from designing a pet fence system that pushed current industry standards at the time, Pet Stop offers personal service, installation, and training for your dog.

You can even find a local Pet Stop dealer in most states across the nation!

Pet Stop has many local dealers all throughout the US.

These dealers can replace parts, send a technician to install the system, and even send a trainer to help train your dog with the fence!

Honorable Mentions

Here’s a brief look at the 2 options that didn’t make our Top Picks list!

1. PetSafe YardMax Rechargeable Collar – Considered for Best Rechargeable Collar

We definitely loved the effectiveness of this collar, and that it was rechargeable.

However, due to some quality and durability issues reported, we recommend PetSafe Rechargeable Collar instead.

2. Perimeter Invisible Fence Collar – Considered for Best Reception

This collar works great, and is designed to work with Invisible Fence just like Pet Stop, but it was a bit heavier and more bulky on our dogs.

Not a problem for larger dogs, but we didn’t prefer it.

While this is a solid choice for a collar, we suggest going with PetSafe In Ground Fence Collar because it’s a little less bulky.
