September 2007 Adoptions. .  . ThereÕs No SlowinÕ Us Down!

Last year we had some data entry issues that prevented some adoptions from being entered for the month – so expect to see some high numbers to beat for next month.  But NOT TO WORRY – we are still beating the pants off last year!

We are now over 500 Adoptions for 2007!  We only need about 95 more adoptions for the year to make our goal of 600! Woo hoo!  Thanks to EVERYONE for all the hard work.

Get Ready for the Jingle Bell Run

We still need participants for the Jingle Bell Run.  Last year BARK participated in the Run/Walk and had a blast.  Unfortunately, our fearless leader from last year is not able to lead us this year.  Would anyone like to be a captain and lead a BARK Team for this event this year?

The event takes place on November 17th at the Innsbrook Pavilion.  Proceeds go to benefit people and dogs who suffer from arthritis, so itÕs a great cause. Last year there were well over 200 people in attendance.  The BARK dogs got to meet many new people and everyone had a great time.  Click here to read all about the run http://jinglebellrunrichmond.kintera.org/faf/home/default.asp?ievent=235609.

If youÕd like to captain a BARK Team, register online here:  http://jinglebellrunrichmond.kintera.org/faf/home/default.asp?ievent=235609  - Then email Kathie@barkva.org so we can put the word out to volunteers that would like to participate.

Doggone Good Information

How many dogs does it take to change a light bulb?

á       Golden Retriever: The sun is shining, the day is young, we've got our whole lives ahead of us, and you're inside worrying about a stupid burned out bulb?

á       Border Collie: Just one. And then I'll replace any wiring that's not up to code.

á       Dachshund: You know I can't reach that stupid lamp!

á       Rottweiler: Make me.

á       Boxer: Who cares? I can still play with my squeaky toys in the dark.

á       Lab: Oh, me, me!!!!! Pleeeeeeeeeze let me change the light bulb! Can I? Can I? Huh? Huh? Huh? Can I? Pleeeeeeeeeze, please, please, please!

á       German Shepherd: I'll change it as soon as I've led these people from the dark, check to make sure I haven't missed any, and make just one more perimeter patrol to see that no one has tried to take advantage of the situation.

á       Jack Russell Terrier: I'll just pop it in while I'm bouncing off the walls and furniture.

á       Old English Sheep Dog: Light bulb? I'm sorry, but I don't see a light bulb!

á       Cocker Spaniel: Why change it? I can still pee on the carpet in the dark.

á       Chihuahua : Yo quiero Taco Bulb. Or "We don't need no stinking light bulb."

á       Greyhound: It isn't moving. Who cares?

á       Australian Shepherd: First, I'll put all the light bulbs in a little circle...

á       Poodle: I'll just blow in the Border Collie's ear and he'll do it. By the time he finishes rewiring the house, my nails will be dry.

How many cats does it take to change a light bulb?

Cats do not change light bulbs. People change light bulbs. So, the real question is:

"How long will it be before I can expect some light, some dinner, and a massage?"

ALL OF WHICH PROVES, ONCE AGAIN, THAT WHILE DOGS HAVE MASTERS, CATS HAVE STAFF!

HAPPY TAILS

I just wanted to drop you a note to tell you how much we adore Pepsi, (now Maddy). She is the best dog we could have ever dreamed of!!! She is so mellow and gentle with our young girls. She is such a wonderful addition to our home. Please let Bev know how much she is loved. I know Bev had a special place in her heart for Pepsi and I want her to know that she has found her 'forever home' with us. - Bob, Sue, Lauren and Sammie H.

Just a little note to let you know Elmer is still great.  He is the most loving "little" thing.  He and Shiloh have had their moments, but are starting to have fun playing outside while I am walking them.  I walk them together and they chase each other and have a great time.  We went to the Vet today, just for a check.  Guess how much Elmer weighs?  The Vet said he was very healthy, just a little over weight.  66.5 lbs!!  Wow!  He is a big one.  But we are definitely walking several times a day, so we feel that will help him. Thanks!  - Terry

We love having Crystal!  (We're calling her "Crissy.")  She's fluffed up, and she's put on some pounds since she's been with us... she certainly enjoys her meals... but we're walking 2 to 3 miles every morning.  The husky in her could pull me all day, I think!  . . . [She has new friends]:  the Schatzi, we adopted from FURS 2 years ago, and Annie (an AARF dog) who belongs to my mother.  (Annie frequently has slumber parties with Crystal and Schatzi.)  Everybody is very happy with our newest friend...she's the greatest dog :)  - Julie Nicol

We have re-named Babe to "Pepper" and she is doing great. She does extremely well at home and seems to love it here. She is comfortable and goofy and sweet as can be. We are also teaching her how to play with toys and she has picked it up very well.   We have some problems when we take her places. Some places she does well and others not as well. The problem is we can't tell when she will like a place and when she won't. But in all she seems to be adjusting the more we take her places and expose her to the world. We mostly want her to know that she is in her "forever" home so that she will be more comfortable out in it. She is filling out some and developing more of a personality with each day. My boyfriend has fallen head over heals in love with her and more so since his dog just passed away at the begining of this month. (he calls her sweet names and I am never sure if he is talking to me or her!!! It is usually her by the way!!)  She does so well around other dogs that I am really thinking I should get her a "bud" for her to play with eventually. For now she is queen of the house and I just live there but all is good.  She also gets along great with the kitty.  Thanks for bringing her into my life. - Leslie and Pepper

Zander is doing awesome!!!!!  He is the sweetest dog ever, very mannerable.  Very quiet.  Just loves to be loved, and he definitely gets plenty of that.   He does well in his crate every day, and only steals things to chew if he thinks we are ignoring him.  We love him so much, and so does the Monacan HIgh School football team (I am their Athletic Trainer)  He is the perfect  addition to our family!  Thanks so much for all your help!! - Kristin

Danny is settling in and has gained a few pounds, he takes refuge in his crate much less than when he first came. He seems to have decided we are going to keep him, so he is no longer on his best behavior and is trying to tell us what to do now.  We hope to take an obedience
training class when the weather cools down. Danny so amazingly nice to people we meet on our walks, yesterday he stood very still so two small children could pet him.  I will try to send you some pictures, I tend not to carry the camera  around, but maybe I'll remember next time we go to the dog park. That  is if I can get him to hold still for a picture. -- Celia - Danny's mom

Hi....Gina
, who we re-named Roxy, is doing wonderfully!!  She has a great temperament.  Very affectionate and sweet.  She is settling in well and we are giving her a lot of attention.  She loves to play outdoors with our children and chase bugs.  She loves chewing on sticks and has made a racetrack out of one of our mulch areas that she just loves to run and run and run around.  It's hilarious.  I think Roxy is a wonderful addition to our family.  Thank you. - Melodie M.

Kirby is doing just fine and has adjusted very well to his new home.  He is so cute and we are enjoying him so much.  We are in the process of sending 2 kids back to college and things are a bit hectic right now.  We may even go out to Pet Smart at Va Center Commons one Saturday or Sunday just to say hi.  We often think about Katy and wonder how she is doing.  We do miss her.  She is such a sweet dog but so scared and nervous.  Hopefully someone can get her to vercome that.-  Kathy

Andy is doing great and everyone here loves him!  Well, except the donkey but they now have an understanding.  To be a great looking cattle dog...he sure is scared of the cows.  but that is ok because he is making one GREAT truck dog with me.  He goes EVERYWHERE with me and has even been caught sleeping in the bed with me.  Thanks, Candy

Annie, formally known as Lilly, is doing well.  Our dog trainer came by last week and worked with Annie.  She did great!  She is still a little skittish around men and anyone different that comes by the house.  Each day gets a little better.  She and our lab, Belle, are still not crazy about each other.  Neither one knows which position to take in the family.  She is adorable and she loves my kids tremendously.  They give her lots of love and attention.  Thank you for checking in and I will update you as time goes by!  Sincerely,   Kelly H.

Cody is doing very well.  He's still a little apprehensive at times, but, for the most part, he's coming along.  He truly is a joy.  He loves to be rubbed and petted.  Thank you for putting us in contact with Cody and thank you for providing a great service to these beautiful pets.  – Giovanka

Niko is doing wonderful and seems to really like his new home.  He runs in the woods every morning and is learning from our 12 yr old golden, Farley, all about chasing the wild creatures in the woods.  He gets along real well with our cat Twigley, and loves the horses as well.  We are working on keeping him from chasing the horses when they run, as we are afraid he might get kicked.  So far the horses have been very tolerant with him, but you just never know, so we are putting him on a leash when we get the horses in so he won't chase them.  Thanks for inquiring about Niko.  Colleen

I just wanted to let you know that Abraham is doing great.  He's still in obedience training classes, and those are going well.  He's got some separation anxiety issues, and we've had a couple of problems related to that, but overall he seems really happy.  He stayed with my dog walker while I was on a business trip, and she said he did great and that he thinks he's a lap dog (which is true). Thanks for checking up on him. - Laurie

Miller (Shane) is doing wonderful!!  He is an amazing, sweet dog and we are so happy to have him in our home!!  House training only took about 2 weeks and he slept straight through the night on his 3rd night with us.  He has been wonderful.  Thank you for all you do and we will definitely come back to BARK when it's time to find Miller a companion!  Bobbi W.

We are very happy to hear from you, both Penelope and I.  She transitioned amazingly, just living the good life.  I could not ask for a better companion.  Recently, my apartment caught on fire after being struck by lightening in the storm.  Obviously she is our first priority and she came out completely fine, no harm at all!!  Penelope handled everything greatly and feels right at home with us (my boyfriend and I) where ever we are.  She is coming along great with training, she knows 'toy', 'sit', 'paw', 'down', and 'walk nice.'  She is an absolute blessing and I'm so grateful to have her around.  Thanks so much for checking in, I'm sure you all hold a special place in her heart as you do mine for rescuing her. Sincerely, Jenna and Penelope

We love Beau! (and I think he loves us too!) He has such an adorable personality and is so affectionate. He has been great with the other animals here and also with my niece and nephews.
We have had to really try and stick with a training program with him (don't think his first home gave him much of that) and in so many ways, he has really learned well. . . . He is definitely having a ball here on the farm. It's a whole new world for him. We have seven acres, way off the road, and are trying to give him some room to run, under supervision. . ..  He does have a mind of his own at times! He is so affectionate and lovable, we adore him. – Elena & Jeff

Jackie is now Harper Lee -- which she seems to like.  She was very, very timid at first but is now running back and forth through the dog door, making friends with the dog next door, and prancing on her leash walking around the neighborhood.  I'm hoping she'll get more friendly to people as time goes by.  All the best to you and your group for the good you're doing the dogs!

Vicki

Denny (whose name is now Cary; also known as "Boogie Woogie" b/c he dances when he gets excited!) is doing great. He settled right into the household and is so attached to me.  I love him to death.  I have taken a few pics, but have not downloaded them to the computer yet; will forward them whenever that happens.  Hope all is well. - Meagan

Coco a.k.a. Scout is settling in very well. She is such a loving dog and we are so glad to have made her a part of our family. She does wonderfully with our young daughter. Scout loves to be outside, but is also very eager to cuddle inside. She's made friends with the dog next door. I think he's glad to have her company, as well.   -Stephanie L.

Dunkin is doing great!!  We are so lucky to have found him, he is the best dog anyone could ask for.  We are truly enjoying him!! Thanks for checking in...Rose

Eden is doing really well!  She has adjusted really well and is getting along very well with our 12 year old Lab named Shadow.  She was a bit timid when we brought her home but has gained confidence each day and is quite at home now on our sofa and on our bed.  She has done well with her crate training and has had very few accidents.  Thank-you for giving us the opportunity to bring her into our home. She is a real sweetheart. Thanks again!  Sandy and Bob H.

'Groucho' is now 'Cooper'! He visited Dr. Zachara last week and is weighing in at 25lbs - Dr. Z said he looked great. We are working on the house-training right now and he and our first rescue, Murphy, are the best of friends. -The Branders

I just wrote Terry to thank her for all her help and Ethel (Now called Lady) is doing great and

she is settling in fine.It took a week or so for her and my 7 years old chow mix to get things

worked out but now they are buddies finally. Thanks, Jack

Bear is doing really well and has settled in nicely.  We're very glad to have him and he seems happy to be here too.  We go on two big walks every day as well as spending a bit of time running after his favorite toy, a stuffed squirrel.  At first, he wasn't very confident and rather shy especially with other dogs but we've been socializing him with the neighbor dogs Shadow and Stella and now he's very playful; we took him to a local dog park yesterday for the first time and he held his own, running and playing with the big dogs.  His confidence has visibly improved and he's very loving and happy. He's well-behaved too and good with commands (though the urge to chase squirrels will sometimes override his best intentions!).  His wonderful personality has made him a favorite with our friends and neighbors.  Thanks for making it possible for us to meet Bear.  We're really pleased your organization brought us together.  all best, Adrienne and Paul

Wanda, who I renamed Mischa is doing pretty well.  We're getting used to each other.  . . .She's a great dog.  She's soooooooo affectionate and sweet.  I love having her as my doggie daughter.-

Nanci

Kady is doing just fine.  Her new name is Kandi - we changed it because we have a niece named Katie and the sound was too close.  We did not want to offend the niece and the dog is just fine with the change and responds well to Kandi.  Kandi is still very shy but slowly coming to life.  She is very good in the house, just prefers to sit in her chair or in the swing on the deck.  She loves the cat which was a great plus for us.  She is eating well, getting 4 walks a day and she is a very good little traveler.  Other people, big dogs, new places, kids etc. cause her to become nervous but we will continue to work with her because we think she is just the perfect pet for us. Thank you for introducing us to Kandi. - Elizabeth and Louis

Jax is doing great!  It's like he has been with us forever, and fits in with our family very nicely.  Jax loves to play fetch and go jogging.  He does seem a little skiddish of taking a bath I'm not sure if that is something he has to get use to or if there is maybe a better way than just washing him outside with a bucket.  Thank you again for allowing us to get Jax. He will make a great companion for many years to come – John

Jack is an amazing dog!! During the past few weeks Jack has had some major anxiety  problems.... He has broken 2 crates by ripping the medal bars off, He has opened the top latch and squeezed through the gab (of course knocking the crate over). So we have decided (knowing that Lilly and him are the best of friends) to try and leave him out [in the house]. Amazingly enough, he is doing well!  Besides sleeping on the couch (which we do not allow) and loving on one of my Fiance's shoe (i'm sure he didnt mean to tear it....hah!) he and Lilly play all day and take naps. We are working on manners also, he is strong and likes to jump, although it hasnt happened but once in the past couple weeks. Progress is in the making! At home Jack is definitly my shadow, following me anywhere I go! He is a sweet boy with a gentle heart! We are lucky to have him!!! – Anna

Taylor(or Rogue as she's been renamed) is doing just great. She loves her walks but mostly just loves laying around the living room with the rest of the family. She's slowly coming out of her shell.  Did you know she watches TV? It's cutest thing. She's very smart and never had the first accident! We're suspicious that something happened to her bc she's very afraid of men and the word "no". But, like I said, she's warming up to everyone and starting to show some personality.-  The Farmers

It's three weeks since Harland came home with us. I think he was a little confused at first, but he has really warmed up to me and my boyfriend. He's met a little poodle at our apartment community that he just loves... and he inspiring us to be more active because Harland is one busy dog! We'll be taking obedience classes in October ... and I'll send some pictures soon... We were looking for a dog for like 2 months and Harland is the gentle enough for me to cuddle and active enough for my boyfriend to go run with.  Sincerely, Lauren C.

Kelsey (aka Jessie now) has settled in just fine and has totally made herself at home.  She is a very sweet and loving dog - but also a bit of a devil!  She steals anything and everything she can get a hold of and chews it up, unfortunately she cannot be left out of her crate unattended (even then we have to confine her to the kitchen and keep a close eye on her).  BARK said she was about a year old and our vet confirmed, but she must still have a lot of puppy in her; I have bought a bunch of rawhide bones in the past month, that's the only thing that at least lasts a couple of hours and she loves chewing on them.  She has also chewed apart her bed.  We fenced off a large section of our yard so she can run and play - she has A LOT of energy. .  Thanks for e-mailing us. - Heather B.

Greta is doing fine. We took her to the vet last week and she got a clean bill of heath. We still have a few behavioral problems to straighten-out - jumping up; and she seems to want to eat our two cats. But aside from that, no real problems! Providing we can work out the cat  issue (we have hopes!), all should  be well.  Thanks for your continued interest in Greta - she's a wonderful dog and we're enjoying her company! - Mike

Riley is doing absolutely wonderful :) We really couldn't have asked for a more perfect dog!! He is extremely affectionate and always happy. He is a bit of a couch potato and has his own couch and blanket that he claimed very quickly. He loves to go for long walks everyday  (especially if he can catch sight of a squirrel :) We just took a trip back to PA last weekend and brought Riley along- he was really great with the other dogs and kids and such a big hit that we had several offers from guests to keep him as their own! I can't imagine why anyone would have ever given up this amazing animal but I guess in a way I'm thankful they did- otherwise he would never have made it into our home. Thanks again for all of your help - we will definitely contact you again when we look for a second dog.  Sincerely, Nicole
