Greetings

Eight lucky BARK dogs began a 16-week training program at
Botetourt Correctional Facility last month. Molly, Rita, Rebel, Candy, Noel, Mabel, Boston, and
Tina are progressing well. They
have all mastered several basic commands such as sit, stay, and down. A few of
them have learned advanced tricks such as roll over, high five and shake.
Each dog has 2 inmates responsible for his/her care and
training. The inmates use weekly
diaries to track their dog’s progress and behavior. Their observations contain
a wealth of information about the personalities and preferences of each dog. Here’s an excerpt on Noel, a gorgeous
girl with a brindle coat:
Noel has been doing well. She loves playing, people, running around,
and playing with balls. She will love you and is a happy dog.
Noel understands her commands and will pick up on a command if you
give her one. She loves for someone to hold her and will go to sleep in your
arms. She will make a good dog for a family because she loves to play and have
fun. Noel loves to get into someone’s bed and go to sleep and when she has to
use the bathroom, she will let you know.
To see photos of the PenPal dogs and read detailed information about the
program at the Botetourt Correctional Facility, visit http://www.barkva.org/html/news.htm.

BARK Intake &
Adoptions for April 2008
BARK
dogs are taken in from local public shelters in Hanover, Louisa, Amelia and other
surrounding counties surrounding Richmond. Most public shelters are ‘open admission’ facilities that are
required by law to accept all unwanted dogs including those found as strays and
those surrendered by their owners.
When
a public shelters runs out of room to house the dogs in its care, they often
are forced to euthanize the dogs who have been there the longest as a means of
population control. BARK and other rescue groups save the lives of these dogs
by them in and caring for them until they find new homes through our adoption
process. In addition to finding each
dog a new forever home, BARK ensures that each dog has his/her rabies &
distemper vaccinations, is spayed/neutered, and receives any basic veterinary
care that may be needed.
In
April, BARK accepted 58 new dogs into our care. During the same timeframe, we were able to place 42 dogs in
new forever homes.
Information
about the BARK adoption process can be found at http://www.barkva.org/html/adopt.htm.
Adoption Spotlight:
Long-time Resident Tom Petty

Meet Tom
Petty, our 7-8 year old blue tick coonhound. Tom has a very friendly nature and
would sure like a best friend to call his own! We are not sure why Tom has
gotten overlooked for quite some time.
Perhaps it is his size, as he’s not a small fellow. Or perhaps it is because he’s not a
puppy. In any event, we find Tom
to be a diamond in the rough – just waiting for someone who can see his
beauty. He has a very happy heart
and has a terrific temperament. He
truly deserves a home where he will be cherished as a beloved pet.
Weighing in
at 50 lbs., Tom is a long, lanky lad with gorgeous markings and the velvety
soft ears typical of his breed. Tom really enjoys people, even though the most
attention he has had in his life has been at the hands of BARK volunteers. Tom’s very popular with our volunteers. They love to steal a moment to give him
a backrub and watch him soak up the love. You can almost see him SMILE!
Tom would
love to put his hound nose to the ground exploring your back yard or strolling
through the woods. He likes to be out and about but also enjoys a nice cuddle.
Tom attended the 2006 Jingle Bell Walk as a BARK ambassador. He met hundreds of people and many
other dogs – he was a true gentleman for the whole event!
Tom came to
BARK when his owner decided he was too old to hunt. Since he spent his early
years being rewarded for hunting, Tom has his own ideas about 4-legged non-dog
creatures. The best home for Tom
is one without cats or other small animals. Tom is calm enough to be a welcome
companion for humans of all ages and loves other dogs but does not need a dog
buddy to make him happy. All he needs is someone to love him.
If you or
someone you know is looking for an easygoing, low maintenance companion, Tom
Petty just might be the one for you. Call or email us today to set up a date to
meet Tom!

More Ways to Help
BARK is an
approved 501(c) 3 charitable organization. Donations are deductible for
taxpayers who itemize other deductions such as mortgage interest or medical
expenses. In addition to cash donations, here are some additional ways to
contribute:
Charitable Securities Account
BARK has opened a Charitable Securities account with
Wachovia Securities. This enables donors to transfer stocks, bonds and mutual
shares directly to BARK without selling them first. The major benefit of
this process is that it allows the donor to avoid paying
a capital gains tax on the appreciated asset and also allows them to take
a tax deduction of the full current market value of the security. This is a great way to help and save on
taxes (which we all would like to do)!
Employee
Giving Programs
Please check out your company’s Charitable Contribution
Program. If BARK is not on their non-profit list, ask them to add us! Here are
just a few possibilities:
Employee Volunteer Grants - Your employer may provide a
monetary grant to your 501(c) 3 choice if they have a set amount of volunteer
hours that you have provided to the non-profit group i.e.: 24 hours during a calendar year will allow a donation
of $100.00 to your non profit choice.
The employer may have a maximum of grants they will give on your behalf
in a calendar year.
Matching Gifts - Some Corporations may match your
501(c) 3 contribution. There may
be a minimum contribution i.e.: $25.00 deems a match, and a maximum that they
will match to any one or more organization in a calendar year.
In-Kind
Contributions -
Some Corporations
may have a program where they will donate Furniture, computers, or groups or
departments can hold a drive for specific needs of a non profit
organization. (These items could be
contributed to BARK based on our “Wish List”.)
Shop for a Cause

We Need You!
Farm Caretakers:
There are many
wonderful dogs waiting for forever homes at the BARK farm. They need YOU to help make their stay
as happy as it can be. BARK’s goal
is for our dogs to get quality time with people as well as clean kennels at the
end of each shift. We need
9 volunteer caretakers per shift to make that happen. If you’re not into poop-scooping, you
can be a ‘Runner’ who gets clean water and shavings to those volunteers working
inside the kennels. Just think of all the calories you can
burn!
If you enjoy hard but
rewarding work and would like to join our kennel cleaning staff, please
contact Linda Lane at 804-883-7740.
You can also go to www.barkva.org,
click on Volunteer/Donate and complete a volunteer application. Our dogs and our Volunteers would love
to see your smiling face!
Spay/Neuter Transport:
BARK
needs help transporting our dogs for spay/neuter surgeries to the Richmond SPCA
and Prevent-a-Litter (PAL) on Monday and Friday mornings. Generally, the
transporter leaves the BARK farm in Ashland with the dogs around 8:30AM (7:30AM
on the last Friday of the month).
The transporters drop the dogs at the proper destination and return
to the farm by 10:30AM. If you can help, even once a month, please contact
Susie by email at dls32t@aol.com.
Media Opportunity &
Transport:
BARK was
recently invited to showcase dogs on WRVA radio’s Friday morning “Dog of the
Week” feature. If you always
wanted to be on the radio and would like to transport a dog to the station once
every 7 weeks, please contact Rohin at robin@sponaugle.net. Everyone at BARK is excited about helping our dogs get their
“5 minutes of Fame” within the Richmond Community!
Volunteer
News:
This month
we welcomed the following fabulous volunteers to our kennel cleaning
staff: Cheryl and Chelsea
Kleindienst, Steven Multog, Pam and Maria Salgado, Catie Eppler, Kasie Taylor,
Jeffrey Newton, Melinda Perron, Joe Harden, Eliza Craymer, Sarah, Cameron and
Sally Coleman, Krista Gulotta, Kevin Lantz, Hayden and Mark Walsh, Michael
Davis, Michael and David Drash, and Jessica Nelms.
The
Adoption Team has added 3 new team members! Darcy is doing a terrific job by helping to process our
adoption applications. Rebecca is
working on contacting the lucky folks with approved applications so we can
match them with one of our wonderful BARK dogs. And Beth is coordinating volunteers for all the adoption
outings and she is helping with special events. If you would like to help out an a BARK adoption outing, or
would like to invite our doggies (and volunteers) to a special event, please
contact Beth at Beth@barkva.org.

On April
19, four Hands-On Richmond volunteers cleared brush and placed trail markers on
another section of the Eagle Trail from marker 11 to marker 20. The Eagle Scout
bridge was also completed between markers 10 and 11. Thanks to volunteer Greg
McCarney and Virginia
Paint for donating
Thompson Water Treatment for the wood. Now. . . who wants to help us apply the
treatment? Anyone interested can
contact Bill at 2210stewarts@comcast.net.
We had some
very welcome guests at the farm on April 26. Thanks to four students from Randolph-Macon
College and two
volunteers from the Hanover Global Youth Service Group for assisting with kennel cleaning
and walking or exercising EVERY SINGLE ADULT DOG! What a great day for the
dogs.
Thanks to
eight members of the Dominion Youth Services group for coming to the
farm to help fill chip buckets for the cleaning crew and exercise dogs.
Our dogs
have it “made in the shade,” thanks to the generosity of Butch Gaddy of Colesville Nursery! Dave Harris and high school student Jeff
Matthews planted 5
large shade trees in the exercise pens near the shelter building on Saturday
May 3. Thanks, Dave and Jeff!
THANK YOU
also goes out to all the volunteers who were on-hand before, during and for
clean up at the BARK Yard Sale.
Special thanks to BARK volunteer Barb Cornett for taking on the mighty
task of organizing all the people -- and the STUFF! Shoppers came from all around and the Yard Sale earned over $700
for the BARK dogs!
And
finally, a huge thank you to all the volunteers and Bob Tillack for helping with the Petsmart
Adopt-a-thon on May 2-4.

Hello and Happy
Spring to all of my
BARK friends! It has been a very
wet month here at the farm, but our dear human volunteers have been doing a
great job of keeping us warm and dry.
You should
see the beautiful trees that have been planted in our playpens! Thanks to Butch Gaddy of Colesville Nursery
and our dear Linda Lane, we will have more shade when we go out to play this
summer. It seems that there is
still one more hole to be dug, so Tom Petty and I plan to start digging while
the ground is still soft. (Check
out Tom below – he charmed his way into his own feature this month!) If
any of you folks would like to come help us dig, we would love the
company! Just let Linda know, and
she will tell you when and where to meet us. We’ll even provide the shovels if
you’d prefer not to dig with your bare paws. (oh yea…you can contact Linda at
804-883-7740 or billlindaphoto@mindsping.com.
Last
weekend we enjoyed watching Bill Stewart hard at work (as usual). He decided to take down the ugly
kennels in the front yard as part of our spring beautification project. That
crafty Bill managed to talk a nice man into helping him with the heavy
work. This innocent guy thought he
was just dropping his daughters off to help around the farm, but somehow Bill
sweet-talked him into working up quite a sweat. The man didn’t seem to mind too much, and agreed to bring
his girls back again next weekend!
We really love it when the kids come to visit- their love is just as
unconditional as ours.
I have
noticed Bill’s wife Emily and some other BARK friends hanging out in the big
new trailer on the hill. Last
Sunday they took Murphy and a couple of other lucky dogs into the trailer with
them! I jumped up and down and
smiled at them, but was unable to convince them to take me along. Murphy told me later that they did some
kind of strange test on him. He
said they petted him and talked to him, examined his teeth and even yelled at
him once. The strangest part was when they showed him the fake baby, a fake
cat, and then the plastic HAND.
These wacky ladies actually fed Murphy a big bowl of canned food, and
then stuck a fake hand right into the bowl while he was trying to eat! He said it was one of the weirdest
things he’d ever seen, but that the food was great. We are pretty convinced that it is some kind of secret
canine cult. My plan is to make
sure they pick me the next time they meet. Hopefully by next month I will be
able to fill you all in on the details!
I’ll close
for this month with an interesting quote from a man by the name of Dereke
Bruce:
“In order
to keep a true perspective of one’s importance, everyone should have a dog that
will worship him and a cat that will ignore him.”
Now that
the weather is warmer, we hope to see you at the farm. Your visits mean so
much to us!!
With
Love,
Tilly

Happy Tails.....Waggin’ Good News!
Duke (our other shepherd rescue) and Rico [are] doing well. Also,
this weekend we're taking Rico to a 14 day obedience school so that he can be a
well mannered, obedient, hard working, happy boy. – Jacquelyne H.

I
have changed Barney’s name to Coal. He has taken well to his new name and is
my best buddy. It took him a few weeks to come out of his shell but now
that he has I am proud to call him my dog. He is very laid back and I
love that about him. Thank you, JP
The pups (Dax and Dante) are settling in just fine. Our boys really enjoy playing with them and our oldest son helps out with their care.- Charity
. . . .Fred is a sweetheart and seems to be settling
in just fine now. We did have a little jealously issue with my other two
dachshunds in the beginning, but they are really accepting each other now and
running though the house playing and chasing each other. Fred seemed
depressed at first, his little face just looked that way, but I think he is feeling
much better now. We do want him to be smiling and it broke my heart to see him
sad! I think he was a little afraid at first but his tail is wagging
now. Fred absolutely adores my
boyfriend, Eugene, and my boyfriend is crazy over him and takes a lot of time
with him. Fred does love affection and we love to give it to him!!
He has been to the Vet to be checked-out and had his nails clipped. .
. My Vet’s employees just love him
too and they are so glad I finally found a new member of the family! -
Karen D.
Hello - York's name has been changed
to Mac - as mac attack - and he answers to it - he has settled in well
with our female schnauzer, Gertie, and they play and run together.
(Sometimes too roughly for me.) He had stomach problems in the beginning,
but after the vet put him on rice and chicken he has now transferred to WD and
is fine - He is a lovely warm affectionate animal and we are so glad we took
him and he adopted us! -
Liz and Gary H.
Grady is
indeed wonderful! He is doing well and adjusting--and we're adjusting to
him as well. We've gotten accustomed to our morning family walks (2 miles
or so) with our baby, my evening run (I think that keeping me company while I
run is his biggest job, one that he does well... until a squirrel crosses our
path--then he goes NUTS!), and the constant company he gives us when we're at
home with him. We started with him sleeping in the crate in our bedroom
at night, but now trust him out of the crate at night--still in the bedroom,
however. Today as we napped (crazy rainy sleepy day), we left the bedroom
door open to experiment--and he did so well! Only destroyed a toy that we
gave him for that purpose. We're so proud of him! We've had a lot
of fun playing in the yard with him, but playing with a frisbee is proving to
be challenging for him... we'll get there! We had a bit of a struggle
getting him into the Jeep in Short Pump and afterwards, but that's proving to
be easier now. We even got him into my car the other day. This is a
relief! . . . Grady met
my parents' dog a couple of weeks ago and they got along famously--important
for family dogs. . . . We started obedience training last Wednesday as we
were a little worried about needing to make certain that he comes back if he
gets out of our fence--.. . . The class went well and Rick the trainer tells me
that Grady is a genius... but we all knew that! . . . Although we saw Grady around kids in the parking lot
of the PetSmart in Short Pump, we didn't really know how he would react to the
short ones... on a walk the other day, my neighbor and his 26 month old
daughter called us over to say Hi, and Grady was wonderful, patiently letting
her poke and pet him. This was a great preview of this weekend. My
best friend and her family came to visit and Grady got along famously with 20
month old Lily, herding her, letting her pet him clumsily, kissing her,
bringing her his toys (which was kind of funny). . . . We went to the vet
for a checkup on Thursday and he is a really healthy boy. Grady now has a
microchip, and took that huge needle like a champ. We're all up on shots,
vaccines, boosters, flea and tick treatments, etc. In short, we LOVE
Grady! Thanks so much for letting us take him home with us! Cheers,
Robyn, Eric & Grady M.

Speckles is now Feenie
and is settling in well. . . She loves playing with our Walker Hound and our
Aussie/basenji mix, but likes to be inside most of the time. She has found a
couple of favorite spots to be around the house and is a happy affectionate
girl.-Nancy C.
Dixie
(was Blossom) is doing great and we
are smitten for sure. She is really starting to get the potty thing and I
have a wonderful friend who dogsits twice a week with her maltese and bishon so
Dixie has fun and doesn't have to be in the kennel. She has a great
personality for our family. She gets really playful 2 or 3 times a day
but besides that she is very docile. We took her to the vet, Dr. Mason,
here in Ashland and she got a great report. Thank you so much.- Lori B.
Robbie is doing really well.
Everyone that has seen him has commented on how pretty he is and how smart he
is. He has been trying to get the cats at the house the play lately. One likes
to hide under the couch and bat as his paws (It is actually quite funny to
watch). I do not think I could have asked for a better dog. He is very loving
and enjoys being around anyone. I finally got a chance to take him to the dog
park here in Ashland last week, and he really enjoyed that. I have been taking
him up to my parent's house to spend time with them and my sister (and her dog,
Yoda). Yoda even likes Robbie which says a lot because he has not played with
any other dogs since my previous dog had to be put down.
Thank you so much for emailing me and checking up on us. I forgot to mention
that he had an excellent check-up at the vet. I better get going because Robbie
has been wanting to play all evening since he has not been able to go outside
to play because of the rain. - Thanks again, Tyler
Copper is doing great. He has
become my constant companion as I work from home. He enjoys traveling in the
car with me, often to visit my mother in Ashland, and walks on a leash
very well. He and my husband are
still finding their way to friendship. Other than my husband, Copper seems to
be able to overcome his initial shyness with new people. For some reason
(possibly someone from his past?) he is still very nervous around
my husband, but they are working on it. Sadie, our other recent BARK adoptee, and Copper get along
great, and they love sitting on the little loveseat in my office as I
work. They also enjoy romping together in our backyard. Sadie
definitely brings out the puppy in Copper. My son Kenny adores both dogs. His dream has finally come true.
Thank
you and all of the volunteers at BARK for doing what you do! – Diane C.

Maura
is a
sweet dog and adjusting well as we pass the one month mark of being
together. I am not sure she was ever in a house, so we have had lots of
learning to do, but we have all been patient and she is becoming very comfortable
with us. She loves to run and chase, and she has lots of agility!
Our children love her, and she is very happy to settle down and snuggle and let
you give her lots of love. . . .Thanks for following up. She is a
joy and we are so glad we were able to give her a home. All the best, Nancy I.
Gunther is now named Bear. He is doing wonderful
we really love him. He got an ear infection we had to take him to the vet and
get it looked at but we got it all cleared up and he feels much better. He loves
our other dog and we seem to have gotten him pretty potty trained he really
only has had two accidents since we have had him which is really good. He loves
going to the dog park and to play with the other dogs. He is such a sweetie and
thinks he is a lap dog when he is already 50 lbs. Thank you so much! Jeanie C.
Danny is now Angus. He is a
wonderful puppy and we couldn't be happier with him. He loves everyone
and is just a friendly, happy guy and is unbelievably well behaved.
He will be going on his first trip to the beach soon and after that he starts
puppy school. I was actually looking to adopt a fully grown,
female dog but once I picked up that puppy, that was it, I had to
bring him home with me! I'm so glad I did. Thanks for
everything,
Kristin
and Angus J.
The
girls are doing wonderfully now- we renamed Shirley & now call her Sophie. They have bonded
& are best of friends. Sophie likes to cuddle & sleep with Maddie- it's very cute! Sophie
seemed a little timid at first, but now she's totally at home & full of
energy. The dogs absolutely love running & playing in the back
yard & we walk them as much as we can as well. Maddie is now a lounge
lizard & thinks that the couch is hers. Maddie has started gaining
more weight now & you can't count her ribs anymore. She still needs to gain
about a few more pounds according to our vet. . . .Our neighbors all love the
dogs & one family has been looking at your site for another dog as
well. Thanks so much for allowing us to adopt these wonderful "kids"!
- Kristen T.
Brandy is truly a gift from God
and is fitting into our home very nicely. It is difficult to determine
what may have happened to leave Brandy homeless as she appears well on her way
to being a great pet. Nevertheless, we are very glad that we have
her. She is very appreciative, likes her loving, and is taking to her
basic training very well. She enjoys her numerous walks and stretches out
every chance she gets. She was checked out by our vet (Shady Grove) and
everyone fell in love w/ her. Her appetite is good (very good) and we
have taught her how to speak which helps her to express her needs. Thanks
again for what you do; Brandy is an outstanding addition to our family.
– Steve A.
Devin was renamed Harry, as in Harry Houdini,
as he tried to run away from us twice in the first hour that we had him.
Fortunately for us, he took to our poodle very quickly and has not tried to run
since. He is wonderful and a perfect companion for our Standard Poodle,
Dupree. Dupree and Harry play themselves silly everyday. I actually
think Harry is younger than what we all thought as when we cut his hair he
shows no gray. My vet aged him around 18mos. He certainly has the
energy of a puppy and the teething behavior. I have lost a leather coat
and a few sweatshirts. Oh well, the price of having pets. Thank you for your assistance in
helping us adopt Harry. He really is a joy and a perfect addition to our
family. - Lara and Sean R.
Cotton has settled in just fine, he is the
sweetest dog...my husband still can't understand how someone would not want
him. He is loved by everyone who
comes to my house. Thanks, Yolanda and Cotton
