BARK Dogs Become
Jailbirds????
The
following 8 BARK dogs will be escorted by BARK volunteer Bill Stewart and
founder Bob Tillack to the Botetourt Correctional Center new Roanoke VA: Noel,
Candy, Rita, Tina, Rebel, Boston, Molly and Mabel.
What’s
their sentence?
Sixteen weeks
of training through Botetourt’s ground-breaking new PenPals program!
Working
with BARK dogs will give sixteen inmates, as well as the dogs, the opportunity
for therapeutic rehabilitation while learning to love unconditionally. There will be a pair of dogs in each of
the Center’s 4 dormitories. Each
dog will be assigned two inmates who will be responsible for their care and
training. Each dog will spend 16-weeks
being trained by inmates using behavior modification tools they have learned
through other correctional programs. There are three correctional staff members
overseeing the program who will keep BARK informed of each dog’s progress on a
weekly basis. This endeavor is a fantastic way to help our dogs, while
promoting the benefits of dog companionship and care to those incarcerated at Botetourt.
BARK will
be adding a special location to our website www.barkva.org
where we will post updates on our little ‘jailbirds’ in the PenPals
program. Special thanks go
out to Amy Almeida for taking the lead on this exciting new program. We look
forward to the success of the first class of prison-trained dogs and anticipate
their quick adoption following their “graduation”.

Foster
Program Coordinator
Our
Foster Program Coordinator, Debbie Lipcsey, has decided to resign at the end
of April. Debbie has done a great job in building up our foster program
and we need someone who can continue her mission.
Foster
homes are critical to the success of the adoption process. We are able to learn more about the
personalities of our dogs through foster care – making it easier to find
the right new person or family for them.
For some of our rescued dogs, a foster home is the first time they have
been inside a real house! For
others, foster care enables them to recover from a traumatic past
experience.
The
Foster Program Coordinator is responsible for the following:
· Recruit and retain
foster parents for BARK doggies.
·
Schedule vet appointments for dogs in foster care.
·
Maintain,
update and enforce the policies in the Foster Handbook.
·
Offer support and assistance to BARK foster parents.
·
Provide medications (supplied via BARK) to dogs in foster care
(such as monthly heartworm preventive) as needed.
·
Coordinate appointments for foster dogs to attend BARK outings/meet
adopters approved by the Adoption Team.
·
Provide weekly email communication about dogs adopted at adoption
outings.
·
Maintain contact info and identity of foster dogs for all BARK
foster parents.
· Other misc communication
and coordination efforts as needed.
If
you are interested in taking on the role that is critical to BARK’s success,
please contact diane@barkva.org.
Home Visit Volunteers
This is a GREAT way to volunteer if
you have a limited schedule but would really like to help the doggies find new
homes. Home Visit Volunteers are people visit potential adopters
and their home environments. An
easy-to-complete Home Visit form is provided and BARK volunteer Teresa Spell is
available to answer any questions.
Home Visits are just one way that BARK can do the best job of matching a
new adopter and new home with a BARK dog. If you are interested in helping with home visits for
prospective adopters please contact Teresa Spell at tspell01@aol.com
and provide your name, city or full address, and phone number(s) where you can
be contacted.
Yard sale volunteers
May 10th is the date for
BARK’s Annual Yard Sale. This is a
really FUN event for BARK and the community, but takes lots of effort!
BARK volunteer Barbara Cornett needs
help with pick up and deliver of donations, pricing items and overall coordination
with pre-sale activities. If you’d
like to help out on the big day of May 10th, volunteers are needed
to set up and breakdown tables, cashier, and donate and/or sell
refreshments. At the end of the
day, volunteers can also help pack-up unsold items for Goodwill.
Barbara would LOVE your help! If you are interested, please email her
at jbc0892@verizon.net.

Fundraising
Reminder~Many ways to contribute, please tell a friend!
BARK is an approved 501 c 3
charitable organization. Donations are deductible for taxpayers who itemize
other deductions such as mortgage interest or medical expenses. In
addition to cash donations, here are some additional ways to contribute:
Every
time you shop at Ukrop's and use your UVC card between February 4 and March 29,
2008, you will earn one Golden Gift Point for every $1 spent. The more you
shop, the more you earn! Points are automatically calculated and tracked on
your purchase receipts. At the end of the program period, a Golden Gift
certificate that details your household's points will be mailed to you. Donate
your points by turning your Golden Gift Certificate in to the participating
non-profit of your choice. The more Golden Gift Points a participating
non-profit collects, the greater their share of the $400,000 payout!
Charitable Securities Account
BARK has
opened a Charitable Securities account with Wachovia Securities. This enables
donors to transfer stocks, bonds and mutual shares directly to BARK without
selling them first. The major benefit of this process is that
it allows the donor to avoid paying a capital gains tax on the
appreciated asset and also allows them to take a tax deduction of the full
current market value of the security. This is a great way to help and
save on taxes (which we all would like to do)!
Employee
Giving Programs
Please check
out your company’s Charitable Contribution Program. If BARK is not on their
non-profit list, ask them to add us! Here are just a few possibilities:
Employee
Volunteer Grants
- Your employer may
provide a monetary grant to your 501(c) 3 choice if they have a set amount of
volunteer hours that you have provided to the non-profit group i.e.: 24
hours during a calendar year will allow a donation of $100.00 to your non
profit choice. The employer may have a maximum of grants they will give
on your behalf in a calendar
year.
Matching Gifts - Some Corporations may match your
501(c) 3 contribution. There may be a minimum contribution i.e.: $25.00
deems a match, and a maximum that they will match to any one or more
organization in a calendar year.
In-Kind Contributions - Some Corporations may have a program
where they will donate Furniture, computers, or groups or departments can hold
a drive for specific needs of a non profit organization. (These items
could be contributed to BARK based on our “Wish List”.)

THANK YOU
to the following students from the University of New Hampshire who renewed our faith in the
goodness of young people: Lizzy
and Darin (trip
leaders), Ashley, Karin, Keely, Crystal, Jen and Emily.
Instead of
a “Spring Break” filled with parties and beaches, these 8 students chose to
participate in an "Alternative Break Challenge." Their university sponsors 10 different
trips around the country for the purpose of giving back to communities –
and they chose BARK as one of their stops!
They worked
furiously with BARK volunteer Bill Stewart for 6 hours. They hauled, dug,
shoveled, walked dogs, cut shrubs, dragged debris, filled holes, placed trail
markers, removed barbed wire, cleared trees, and packed up winter canvases in
the kennels. Through it all it was clear – they were HAVING FUN!! Everyone,
including the dogs, had a great time and accomplished a great deal.
Next year
they hope to return – we hope they do too! A big THANK YOU goes out
to them from all of us at BARK (and all the doggies too) for helping create a
wonderful, memorable day at the BARK farm.

THANK YOU
goes to Eagle Scout Tyler Dawson, who completed a substantial bridge over
the creek at Marker 10 on the "Eagle Trail."
THANKS to Zooom
Printing for
printing the cards we use to attract volunteers. They do this for free
and out of the love for animals. Many thanks, Ben Rossie!
THANKS to volunteer
Susie Massie
for spending quality time with several BARK dogs. Here’s what she had to say about
them: “I took Bus, Reece, Rita, Candy, Maximillian, and Christopher on the
path to the creek. They loved it!! Rita, Candy, Max and Chris stayed right near
me and came when called (I use a really long leash so they feel like they’re
free). Chris actually did a formal heel the whole time! Reece and Bus took a
bit more encouraging to come along but still would check to see where I was.
They just need a bit of relationship building to create that bond where they’ll
stick close by. Candy was great. She is so easy to walk on a leash, and so
quiet, calm and personable. She loves gentle cuddling, too.”
THANKS to volunteer
Dave Harris,
who has been busy removing some of the winter barriers in the refrigerator/sink
area. Dave also cut down the size of the old mechanics work bench to allow for
better passage and cleaned up the area.
THANKS to
new volunteer Darcy Inge, for her help with the newsletter and public relations.
THANKS to whoever
provided the new red rope leashes that just arrived at the BARK farm!
Otter, a
new arrival at BARK, requested that a special THANKS go out to volunteer
Bill Stewart and founder Bob Tillack. You see,
they rescued her on a trip they were making to the Boutetort prison. Otter is a small female beagle that
Bill & Bob found near Otter Peaks on the Blue Ridge Parkway. Otter says she
was really hungry because she had not eaten in a long time and hated the fact
that her ribs were showing. She
LOVED the dog treats and chicken McNuggets given to her by Bob & Bill. She feels so lucky now to be a part of
the BARK family.

Notes from the Farm: From Matilda!
Hello to
all of my human friends! It has been a busy month here at the farm, with
several new volunteers coming by to help clean our rooms. Some days our regular
cleaning crew looks so tired and worn out, I know they love it when new people
come to help. Linda told me she sure wished we had more help during the week,
as most folks are only available on weekends. Maybe more people will show up
when the weather improves.
Tom and I
have been on our best behavior lately as some strange and nasty rumors have
been going around. Would you believe that 8 of our friends have been sent to
jail?! We aren't sure what they did wrong, so we are doing our best to keep our
own noses clean. I know that Candy is an escape artist, and Rita is real bad
about jumping up on people. Sometimes Molly can be rather moody, and Tina is
quite picky about her roommates. But locking them up seems rather extreme to
me! Tom says he heard that their sentence is pretty lenient and that they will
be back out in a few weeks. While they are in there they will be living with
humans who will try to teach them better manners. Once they are sprung, we are keeping our paws crossed that
they can go to foster homes and show off all the great things they have
learned! I certainly hope that
their trainers will keep in mind what Edward Hoagland once said:
"In
order to really enjoy a dog, one doesn't merely try to train him to be
semihuman. The point of it is to
open oneself to the possibility of becoming partly a dog"
I know for a
fact that the human prisoners will benefit from spending time with their canine
jailbirds. After all, doesn't EVERYONE feel better when a dog is around?
So come on
out to the farm and spend some time with us! Your visits mean so much to us.
With love,
Tilly

Governor Kaine will soon sign
Virginia’s new anti-animal fighting statute, H.B. 656, into law this month.
Congratulations and many thanks to
BARK volunteers Kathi Sanders and Amy Hendrickson, who helped draft the
legislation as part of Virginia’s Anti-Dogfighting Coalition. Thanks also go out to the many BARK
volunteers and supporters who contacted legislators to voice their support.
Here’s a summary of the legislation
compiled by the Humane Society of the United States:
H.B.
656 to be Signed Into Law
The Humane Society of the United States
praised Gov. Tim Kaine for passing legislation that will make all organized
animal fighting activities a felony. Virginia now has what The HSUS considers
one of the nation's most effective laws to eradicate cockfighting and
dogfighting.
H.B. 656 was introduced by House Majority
Leader H. Morgan Griffith, R-Salem, and passed on Feb. 12 by a vote of 93 to 2.
The State Senate passed the same bill by a vote of 40 to 0 on March 3. A
companion bill to H.B. 656, S.B. 592, was introduced by Sen. Tommy Norment,
R-Williamsburg, is now awaiting the governor's signature.
"Virginia is well on its way to having
what we at The HSUS consider to be one of the best animal fighting laws in the
country," said John Goodwin, manager of animal fighting issues for The
Humane Society of the United States.
The HSUS commends Rep. Griffith and Sen.
Norment for their leadership in this endeavor. Additionally, The HSUS is
grateful to Gov. Tim Kaine, Attorney General Bob McDonnell and Agriculture and
Forestry Secretary Robert Bloxom for their support of this legislative effort.
The bill will toughen Virginia's animal
fighting penalties by making organized cockfighting a Class 6 felony,
attendance at an organized animal fight a Class 6 felony and allowing a minor
to attend or participate in an animal fight a Class 1 misdemeanor.
Since its inception in 1954, The HSUS has
combated to end animal fighting in our nation. However, the secretive nature of
these underground industries had been an obstacle in previous efforts to
strengthen Virginia's animal fighting laws. The high-profile Michael Vick
dogfighting case provided the impetus necessary to make this latest legislative
effort a success.
Additionally, the bill will permit searches
regarding animal cruelty cases to be continued after sunset without requiring
an additional warrant, make it a Class 6 felony to use any device or substance
to enhance an animal's ability to fight, provide for streamlining of the
forfeiture of animals so that they do not have to be held for years without
resolution to the case and ensure that bond will now have to be posted if an
owner is contesting the forfeiture of fighting animals.
Animal fighting is associated with various
social ills such as illegal gambling, organized crime, drug trafficking,
illegal guns and homicides. Firearms and other weapons are common at animal
fights, primarily due to the large amounts of cash present. A raid last year in
Mecklenburg County resulted in the arrest of MS13 and Mexican Mafia members by
the Department of Homeland Security. Illegal gambling, narcotics and children
as young as the age of 4 were present at the pit.
Organizations backing
this legislative effort include the following:

All of us
at BARK extend our gratitude to Oprah Winfrey for her moving expose on puppy
mills which aired in early April.
The show covered the atrocities of puppy mills, the importance of
spay/neuter for all pets, and the tragedy of euthanization occurring in today’s
shelters. She urged viewers to
ADOPT pets from shelters and rescue groups. It was a very powerful show that every person who feels that
humans should show compassion to dogs should watch.
If you’d
like to help stop these cruel, inhumane establishments called puppy mills, please

Happy
Tails.....Waggin’ Good News!
Lona, whom we renamed Myra, is doing wonderful! She was 3 months
when we adopted her. Now she is almost 7mths. Myra is such a joy! I could not
imagine life without her now. It amazes me how well behaved she is! She has
never chewed on anything other than her toys, she only had a few accidents in
the house, and she follows commands very well. Myra came from a fostered home,
and I am very thankful that she was able to have that kind of love! Her foster
mother, Teresa Spell, is a wonderful lady with lots of love in her heart.
I am so thankful that she was a huge part of Myra's life. I credit her for
Myra being such a wonderful puppy! My next dog will definitely be a
BARK dog! – Melissa S.
Dandy...now named Duke is settling in very well and we are
all in love with him already! He's been here for 2 weeks now and he is
getting along well with our other dog, Katie and he is a total lovie boy with
us...we get lots of kisses! He's got a great temperament. . . .Katie
and Duke are so cute together sometimes and are very funny to watch
when they're playing chase, keep away and wrestling!! As with kids, there
are moments I think, "what was I thinking" but we love our dogs
(and our kids) and are very happy to have them!! :) Thanks again for asking about him! :) Have a great night! ~Nikki
Sam & Dixon are getting settled and are doing great. They
especially like it when I take them out and they can run around in the yard. –
Maureen

Bart is doing great!
We just went away for Spring Break and had my parents and brother watch
him. His first Overnighter and he did great. He is such a sweetheart
and gets along with EVERYTHING!! Please know Bart is so loved and
adored. We had to put our 11 year old cat down before Christmas and that
was Bart's buddy so we are planning to get a new kitty for him come
April. Thanks for keeping in touch!- the Hopson family
It
was two years on March 11 that I adopted "Jazz." She is the
sweetest, most lovable Bichon on four feet. I had lost my husband in May
2005 and my Shih Tzu that December. I didn't think I could love again,
but "Jazz" has more than filled my heart and life. At first she
didn't play with toys (seemed like she didn't know what to do with them) but
now she is very playful and we have a daily toy toss. She loves to go for
walks and ride in the car, and she follows me from room to room. This
match was certainly made in heaven! -Jan S. Glen Allen, VA
My
husband I adopted Tessa a year ago. She is doing great. Over the past
year she has really bonded with our other dog and she seems to trust us more
and more. She even has a playful side that has caught us off guard from time to
time! We just welcomed a baby to the family and Tessa seems to be doing very
well with the newest addition. I've attached a current photo to share with her
former foster parents. Best
regards - Lynn & Mark M.
Calvin
aka Jackson (our
son changed his name) is doing great. We have been really surprised at how well
he has done. While we were told he was not housebroken he has not had any
accidents and goes straight to the back door when he wants out. He is a pretty
smart pup! To be honest if we could have been sure we would have gotten a dog
like Jackson we probably would have done it long ago . . .
we are loving having him here and he seems pretty happy with all the
attention. I do think he might miss a few of his old play buddies but we are
working up to introducing him to a few of the neighborhood dogs. Thanks so much
for everything . . .
Mark, Barbara, Kyle and JACKSON!
My
boyfriend and I are thrilled with Erma and how she is fitting in with our
home and our dog, Pig. She is coming out of her shell quite a bit and displaying
hilarious quirks that make her so much more charming than I ever would have
imagined. All she wants to do is hang out in our yard and watch and stalk
the squirrels and the birds. When we come home, she loves to announce the
reunion of the pack with several howls, which never ceases to crack us all up!
She is incredibly sweet and lovely and we totally love her.
She did
however make a mess in the living room the first couple of days, by chewing
stuff and relieving herself inside, but that was our fault. I took the
chance by leaving her alone for a while to see what would happen, since we
didn't really know her history of housebreaking. So when she showed she
definitely needed some help, we set up a crate for when we are both gone and it
has been working very well for her since then, no more messes. She sleeps with
us in our bedroom, out of the crate, and no messes have happened at all during
the night, which is a very positive sign. We feel that she needs to be secure
with her new routine, which we keep very faithfully, and then she will realize
she is not going to be tossed out again and that in the near future she can be
trusted to stay out of her crate for a length of time. I am using plenty
of positive reinforcement, with treats and affection, and she has so far
learned to relieve herself in one area in our yard, to sit, and she is almost
getting the "come "command. .
. .she is still timid about
some stuff but already she is so much more comfortable than she was just a week
ago. She's just so happy running around our yard and playing with Pig. Thank you so much for letting us take
home such a lovely dog and we appreciate so much the time and effort all of you
put into saving Erma!! Take care, Valeria F.
Lacy seems to be adjusting just fine to
her new home. She is such a sweet girl and has alot of personality.
The training is going very well and she loves playing with her toys in the back
yard and going for long walks. She also loves our cottage at the
lake in Cumberland County and likes to walk into the water. She gets
carsick on the way there but doesn't get carsick coming back. Hopefully
she will get use to the ride as we go every weekend. Lacy is such a friendly puppy.....she wants to meet everyone
she comes across. She also wants to meet every dog she comes
across. . . .Tell Bob that he was right......Lacy
is a "luv".- Marie and Sam G
Gigi (Chloe) is doing great. We
believe she is very happy in her new home. We are starting obedience
classes this Wednesday evening and looking forward to working through some of
the minor growing pains we are experiencing now but it is obvious that she has
just as much (if not more!!) love to give us as we have for her!! Thanks
again – Mike B.
Initially Brown,
AKA Toby had
a bit of trouble understanding that he did not need to mark everything as his
own but within a few weeks, we no longer felt like we needed to watch his every
move. And I don't remember when his last accident was which is wonderful! He and Peca have become wonderful
friends which was the hope since she had lost her "Daddy" before we
acquired Toby. . . .As for temperament, he's priceless. He's exceptionally laid
back and easy going so he fits in well. The cats took about 24 hours to accept
him and it's common to see them cuddled on his bed with him. And his brown eyes
won him a place on the couch next to my husband, which had been an ABSOLUTE no
before Toby. Can you say "wrapped around his finger"? Thanks again to
BARK for helping us find such a perfect match for our family!-Sarah S.
Ashley
(aka Phoebe) is
settling in nicely. She has discovered that the orthopedic dog bed that
sits in front of our full length kitchen windows is perfect for sunning and
watching the world go by!
She is the
sweetest little thing. Appetite remains good and we are working on the
essentials, like sitting and not begging. Leash walking is our real test
because when she is in the house she does fine but when outdoors she becomes a
"statue"....little by little and minute by minute she is getting there. Good news is that she and our Boykin
have become fast "bedmates" and love to nap together. It's so
cute watching her learn to play with dog toys and see her roll around in the
grass. Thanks to you and all the
"fur baby" rescuers.- Al and Jan S.
Kira is settling in well. The
first week was a little rough when she was left alone since she no longer had
her other siblings around. But she is now settled in and definitely getting
into her puppy stages full force. She has learned to sit, stay,
heel, and shake. And already knows where her room is when I
have to go to work. She is a very smart and sweet pup. - Lauren
Sadie Bell (now Darby) is doing great. She seems very happy
in her new environment and I continue to see more enthusiasm and personality
coming out of her daily as she gets comfortable. Our older yellow lab and she
are already great friends! She is learning some basic commands very quickly and
seems to be an incredibly intelligent dog. I don't know if it is her
personality or her time with the many dogs at BARK, but Darby is excellent at
meeting new dogs. She is very calm and controlled while still showing some
interest and excitement at each new friend. I contacted Rebecca with an update
a couple of weeks ago and to say thanks for her effort on Darby's behalf!
Thanks again and rest assured that Darby is the bright spot of each day and
well cared for by everyone in her new family. - Jamison
Dory is VERY shy, however, we
did take her on an adventure today – to my Mom’s retirement home.
She loved riding in the car, & was fine with meeting my Mom, but she
absolutely HATES going thru doorways. Go figure. . .
She did sit on Becca’s lap today (at the retirement home - a first).
At home she spends her time upstairs sitting on my bed waiting for
me to return from work. . .
Or she hides under the baker’s rack in the kitchen. She loves
bedtime & bouncing & rolling all over me & the pillows. Not
quite so thrilled about going night-night in her crate, but after she’s settled
down & sat on her pillow (umm, that would be formerly MY pillow) for
awhile, into the crate she goes.
. . .Dory has a great affection for rolls
of toilet paper – have to keep those out of her reach. Thanks, She is a
sweetie-Dottie
Brandy is truly a gift from
God and is fitting into our home very nicely. It is difficult to
determine what may have happened to leave Brandy homeless as she appears well
on her way to being a great pet. Nevertheless, we are very glad that we
have her. She is very appreciative likes her loving and is taking to her
basic training very well. She enjoys her numerous walks and stretches out
every chance she gets. She was checked out by our vet (Shady Grove) and
everyone fell in love w/ her. Her appetite is good (very good) and we
have taught her how to speak which helps her to express her needs. Thanks again
for what you do; Brandy is an outstanding addition to our family. - Steve A.
Kelsey and Charlee have become
the best of friends. They have taught each other different ways to play with
their different backgrounds, they like to nap together, and even retrieve
together. Kelsey has been working with my husband at catching balls and
Frisbees in the air, I don't know who is having more fun. We just wanted to
thank you all again, we were looking for a friend for our Charlee and we got
just that! Thank you - The Mareks
